For each category, take notes on the information you learned or found interesting. In addition, you must look and take notes on the sections I outline. *Notes do not have to be in complete sentences, but they do need to be complete and understandable. Category Explorers Main Notes Portugal: Silk Road In 1274 Marco and Niccolo Polo set out for a journey to travel the silk road from Italy to china. Polo even wrote a book about the Silk Road and materials he hadn’t seen before. Spain: Spices European Rulers wanted a way to go to the Indies to get spices and silks. But spices cost much money so they went to the Indies to get it for a lower price and spices were important. France: The Indies Portugal was the first country to sail to the east indies by sailing around Africa and through the Indian ocean.Christipher Columbus thought he could sail to east indies by going west. France: Pirates In 1500s people were scared of sailing around the sea because pirates would attack them. French and English pirates stole from the Spanish and form the Caribbean. One most famous pirate was Sir Francis Drake who was very successful from stealing from the Spanish Queen Elizabeth wanted him to be beheaded instead she called him up to be a knight. England Legends, Destination, and Goals Converting Natives: One of the goals for the explores was to spread the Christian faith to the New World. Explores thought it was their divine duty to convert indigenes people to Christianity. Men, women and children were baptized . Some people didn’t like this so they got killed and burnt the village down. Life on Ship: Life on a sailing ship was miserable. Sailors got no privacy and they didn’t get a lot to eat. Some sailor’s slept in uncomftable beds with no clean sheets. They even got scurvy with no vitamin c. Some sailors eat leather and sawdust. You couldn’t even do your business because you had no privacy. Pirates: Sailing in the 1500s was dangerous because of pirates. Pirates basically owned the sea because everyone was too scared to sail however some country’s did sail like the English but the pirates stole from their ship. The pirates landed in North America and stole for their as well. The most famous pirate of all time is Sir Francis Drake he was successful from stealing from the Spanish and some people wanted him to beheaded but instead queen Elizabeth made him a knight. Sea Monsters: Sailors were scared from sailing the seas because of sea monsters. The most famous sea Monster was called the Kraken and it was a large squid who through the ships in the air. Their were even books written about sea monsters. His dad was also an explorer. In 1497 he was sent to explore India. He had four boats filled with criminals to go to India. In India De Gama traded extensively for Asian products and spices. He was well received in India but wore out his welcome and left. He left India in August 1498.He returned to Lisbon on 1499 and all of his crew members died of scurvy and he was a hero. In 1502 King Manual sent him back to India but this time he was well prepared and came with 20 armed ships with some Muslims on board and when they reached India he brutally murder some. He returned to Lisbon in 1503 and died in India in 1524 of an illness. Prince Henry: Prince Henry was a Portuguese navigator, explorer, soilder and a prince. He was sent to many explorations but he was most famous for going from Portugal to the west coast of Africa. He was resonanable for Portuguese role in the Great Age of Exploration. In 1419 Prince Henry started the first navigation school at Sagres, Portugal. The goal for the school was to help them explore, map making and science to help go to the west coast of Africa. Before the sailors were too scared to sail to Africa because of sea monsters and boiling water near the equator. Prince Henry school sent 14 explores to explore in the ‘sea of Darkness’ because no one has ever done it before. Prince Henry even sent more sailors to go further south. Prince Henrys influence was the first step for finding a new route to the Indies. Ferdinand Magellan: Ferdinand Magellan was born in Sabrosa Portugal in 1480 into a noble family. In 1506 Ferdinand Magellan was sent to the spice islands (Indonesia) to participate in some military and exploratory expeditions. In 1510 he was promoted captain. In 1512 he was stationed in Morocco and he made plans for a shortcut to the spice islands. On September 20, 1519 Magellan and 237 crew members set sail on five ships from Snalucar de Barrameda to find a short cut to the spice Islands. After three months of sailing Magellan and crew stopped at Rio de Janeiro. Most of his sailors got scurvy and the had to eat rat, leather and saw dust and 20 men died from it . On march the 6 they finally reached land. On April 27/1521 Magellan died and most of his crew sailed away. Giovanni da Verranzanno: Giovanni da Verranzanno was born around 1485. He spent many years as a pirate, preying on the Portuguese and Spanish sea vesals. He stole nearly two million dollars worth of gold from Spanish vessels that were bring gold and jewels back from Mexico. In 1524 Verranzanno was chosen by king Francis I of France to search for the ‘Northwest Passage’ to Asia through North America. On march 1 1524 he reached Cape Fear and North Carolina and decided to explore the coast line. He made two trips to America and on the second trip he was killed by natives.
