Explorers Main
Notes
Portugal: Silk Road
Marco Polo was an Italian, famous explorer. He travelled the silk road of Italy. He
travelled with his boat through the sea for 24 years. He travelled over 4,000 miles.
Marco and his uncle Niccolo Polo were the first European whom explored china. He
wrote a book about his adventures. He invented a lot of things useful to us today.
He also wrote the geography of China. The two brothers traded when they were on
the silk road of Italy.
Spain: Spices
The European rulers decided to send boats to for example the indies, to go and get
spices, silks and other products that they needed. The spices in the East indies, were
had a low price, so it was a very good idea to send boats because the spices were
very expensive. They are three most common spices that they would sell: Pepper,
Ginger and Cinnamon.
France: The Indies
Portugal was the first European country to send an explorer to the East Indies,
successfully, by sailing. Christopher Columbus was a very famous sailor in our time,
he discovered America. He thought that if he would sail west, he would reach the
Indies. When he arrived to East indies, and he led to discover that that was North
America.
France: Pirates
For the pirates working in the 1500 was hard, because when they would be on the
sea sailing, they had the risk of having diseases and storms. The pirates would attack
the villages, the people and sea vessels. The pirates would be all of there life’s on a
boat sailing the seas, but the most common one that they were on was “Barbary
Coast”, where Islamic pirates attacked and stole from the English ships along the
north African sea. English and French pirates would go on Spanish ships and destroy
attack and steal from them. The queen of Spain asked the Queen of England to
behead them, but Queen Elizabeth instead made him knight. Thos are one of the

Spices were used to:
Spices were used to preserve food and to came the food from wasting. But the
spices were expensive and dangerous to get.
Before ships, countries got spices by using:
Before they had ships, the people from the country (traders) had to walk all the way
to Asia, to get the spices. They had to walk through the silk road from Europe to
Asia. The Europeans were the first country that made the traders go to the Indies
with ships which made it much easier.
Which country was the first to explore a sea route:
The Europeans were the first country to go to Asia and get the spices with boats,
through the sea route. They also did that because it would be easier and also
because the silk route that they would normally take was frequently closed caused
by the war going on. However the sailors going to get the spices were all afraid of
the sea monsters, living in the sea and the boiling hot water from the sea. So the
progress was very slow.
Spain tried to find a westward route to Asia led by what explorer?
Christophe Columbus, he was a very famous explorer and the Spanish king and
queen financed him to go to Asia through the Indies. Christophe found during his
journey, North America.
Instead of finding the Indies, where did Spain end up and colonize?
Christophe Columbus was the sailor that the Spanish people hired, he was normally
going to the Indies to find spices for the Spanish citizens but instead of finding the
Indies he discovered, North America.
Who crushed the Aztecs in Mexico?
Hernando Cortes crushed the Aztecs in Mexico.
What empire was conquered in South America and by whom?
France and England conquered South America, all America.
France and England explored what region?
South America and also America it self.
Which country, France or England, eventually controlled most of North America?
In 1700’s England was the country that controlled mostly North America because

Legends,
Converting Natives:
Destination,
They truly believed into god, the explorers thought that god had the power to help
and Goals
and save them in anyway possible, and save their soul. They also believed that god
make their armies indestructible. So they would stick a big cross of Jesus, so that
they would get the power to protect and save them by god. Men, woman and
children were baptized because if they did that it would show god that they are
willing and they would get the power of god protecting them. If they didn’t do it
they would get killed for example Magellan he was killed because he didn’t want to
convert
Life on Ship:
Sailing all of your life was very miserable but they got used to it. The sailors were
forced to get the consciences like sea storms, malnutrition, lack of privacy, and fetid
living quarters. Food was a very big issue on the sea because the lake of food was
very big. They could eat for example: Beef, pork and other meats, but the problem
was is that because they had long journey’s it was hard to not make the food spoil
straight away. Because of that problem they had to eat with worms, bugs, flies and
other living creatures. Because of that they would get sick for not having a healthy
diet and the lake of Vitamin C. there was a very common sickness Scurvy it was a
horrible and horrifying sickness, horrifying demise as their gums and tongue became
black and swollen, and their bodies covered with sores. Because sailors didn’t have
any privacy they were very disgusting they wouldn’t get any shower and when they
had to go to the bathroom they had to do there business in the sea. They also didn’t
have any clean clothes or sheets.
Pirates:
Sailing was a very risky business not only because of the storms and the diseases but
also the pirates that were around. They are evil, they would attack everyone the
villages, the ships… The pirates would be sailing everywhere but the most common
place they would be was the “Barbary Coast.” The Islamic pirates would attack and
steal from the English ships, when that would happen was normally on the North
African Coast. The English and the French pirates attacked normally the Spanish
sailors in the Caribbean sea. There was one famous pirate he was called Sir Francis
Drake, he attacked a lot of Spanish ships so the queen of Spain demanded that
Queen Elizabeth of England beheaded him, but, instead of doing that, she made him
a knight. That is one of the reasons that Spain declared war to the English people in
1588.
Sea Monsters:
In the 1400’s and the 1500’s half of the world has not been explored, yet, so they
believed in myths and other story’s that weren’t true. The sailors at that time
believed everything, because of those story’s they were all too scared to go to far
and to sail, because they believed that there was a sea monster, and that the water
was boiling in the middle of the equator. There was one sea monster that was
“discovered” in one of there expeditions, it was the Kraken; it was very big monster
he could eat and toss around the ships. But the reports that the explorers wrote
were a bit exaggerated. Other monsters, known as "The Sea Bishop," and "Sea
Monk" had the heads of clergy men and the bodies of an unidentified sea creature.

Explorer Profiles
Vasco de Gama:
He was born in 1460 to a Portuguese family, in Sines, Portugal. He’s father was also
a very successful explorer; he took trips from Portugal to India. He unfortunately
died in that epic journey, but before he did, Portugal needed absolutely a sea route
from Portugal to the Indies to get the Spices Cheap. In 1497, Portuguese King
Manuel I financed a voyage led by Vasco da Gama. Many, however, still believed the
trip to be impossible, because they did not think the Atlantic Ocean connected with
the Indian Ocean. So he did that Journey, five month he and he’s crew successfully
made it pass around the Cape of Good Hope and into the Indian Ocean on
November 22. After making a few stops on the way, he finally arrived to India on
May 20, 1498. So when he arrived he traded his Asian Spices for Indian Spices, then
he left India to come back to Spain, after he was told to pay a heavy tax and to leave
the goods he traded for. When he came back almost all of his crew died of Scurvy,
but he still became a hero, King Manuel I made him an admiral. Then in 1503, he
decided to go back to India, with more ships and more people, when he arrived
there, he killed a few people to prove his power. After he decided to come back to
Lisbon, but he died in India because of some sickness.
Prince Henry:
He was a famous navigator, even though he didn’t sail that much, but he had sailors
of his own. He send many expeditions from Portugal to west Coast Africa. He
responsible for in the great age of Exploration. Because of him, Portuguese
explorers were the first to sail to Africa's Gambia River.
Ferdinand Magellan:
