Allogenic Unrelated Donor Stem Cell Transplant Process
Unrelated Donor
Patient
Chemotherapy/Radiation
Collection
Chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy
is given to the patient.
Stem cells are collected from the donor's
blood or bone marrow. On some occasions
collected cord blood is used.
Infusion
Cell Transportation
Stem cells are infused into the patient.
Cells are transported from the collection
center, anywhere in the world, to a
transplant center by a qualified courier.
Engraftment
Cell Preparation
Collected stem cells are prepared for
infusion in the laboratory. Cells are usually
transplanted without freezing.
The cells move through the bloodstream
and settle in bone marrow. They begin to
grow and produce new red blood cells,
white blood cells and platelets.
