NITROSHURE™ Nitroshure is an encapsulated urea supplement for lactating dairy cows. By using Balchem Corporation’s proprietary encapsulation technology, Nitroshure is designed to create a slow-release N source for the rumen, allowing for greater flexibility in feed programming for dairy nutritionists and producers. Nitroshure is also a good source of nitrogen for rumen microbial protein synthesis. Mode of action Nitroshure creates a slow release of rumen degradable N from the urea it provides. This in effect creates a nitrogen release curve that is more similar to soybean meal that to urea itself. This allows for better synchronization of the nitrogen from Nitroshure with available energy in the rumen, a pattern that is known to lead to improvements in microbial protein production. By providing this nitrogen in a protein dense supplement, this allows for a lower percentage of the overall diet to be committed to feeding protein supplements, allowing for increased utilization of other dietary ingredients. Feeding recommendations Nitroshure can be fed to lactating dairy cows at the rate of 0.125 to 0.5 lb. per head per day. Suggested uses Nitroshure can be used to replace up to 1 to 2 lbs. of dietary ingredients, particularly protein supplements. This will allow for an additional 1 to 1.5 lb of DM from other non-protein dense ingredients such as forage, energy concentrates or byproducts to be used along with Nitroshure. This allows the nutritionist and dairy producer to focus their ration programs on optimizing areas such as rumen health, milk production or byproduct utilization. Mixing and handling recommendations Mineral premixes Nitroshure can be safely mixed into dry mineral vitamin mixes (= 97% dry matter), provided normal industry mixing times are followed (3 minutes or less). Nitroshure will have no storage limitations beyond those of the remainder of the premix in this application. There are no ingredients that need to be avoided in these mixes. Grain premixes Nitroshure can be safely mixed into grain premixes, or any premix that is > 3% moisture. It is recommended that the time from formulation of the premix until is it completely used the dairy producer not exceed four weeks. However, there is no indication that Nitroshure has any shelf life concerns greater than that of the overall grain premix under practical storage conditions. Pelleted feeds It is not recommended that Nitroshure be included in pelleted feeds at this time. Further research is ongoing to fully characterize the stability of Nitroshure in pelleted feed applications, however, until that data is known, it is believed that the heat of the pelleting could damage the slow release properties of Nitroshure’s coating.
