New Developments and Expansion of Cardiology Services at the
Bon Secours Hospital Cork
The Cardiology Department at the hospital is pleased to announce the expansion of its
Cardiac Services and welcomes a new consultant to its expert Cardiac Team, further
enhancing the service. These new developments, complimented by the most up to date
medical technology, elevate the standard of Cardiac Care offered at the Bon Secours Hospital
Cork, to a new level.
Meet the Consultant Cardiologist Team
The Department is supported by a team of Consultant Cardiologists with expertise in
coronary care. The team is comprised of 5 Consultants; Dr. Conor O’Shea, Dr. John
Kenny, Dr. Heiko Kindler, Prof. Carl Vaughan and the most recent addition to the team, Dr.
Keith Morrice – a Consultant Cardiologist with a special interest in Electrophysiology (EP),
(Investigation of the causes and treatment of abnormal heart rhythms). Dr. Conor O’Shea
welcomes the new appointment. “Dr. Morrice, has recently returned from Belgium where he
worked in one of the most advanced cardiac centres in Europe. He brings with him invaluable
Electrophysiology expertise, specialising in Cardiac Arrhythmias, ablation, insertion
of pacemakers and automatic implantable cardioverter-defi brillators.”.
Dr. Heiko Kindler’s recent appointment also adds considerably to the profile le of the expert
cardiac team. Dr Kindler heads up the recently launched Heart Failure Clinic. He is also an
expert in Screening for Cardiac abnormalities, and has extensive experience in athlete/sports
participation testing, Cardiac Imaging and MRI and the investigation and treatment of
heart rhythm disorders.
Cardiac Services
The Cardiology Unit is a modern, state-of-the-art dedicated department, which provides a
full range of cardiac diagnostic investigation and interventional procedures for patients with
heart disease. The hospital recently launched and developed its Cardiac Catherisation Lab
offering a variety of interventions including Cardiac Angiography, Stenting, Fractional Flow
Reserve Studies, Pacemaker insertion, Loop Recorder insertion, Cardiac Re-synchronisation
therapies, Electrophysiology Studies & Radio frequency ablation and ICD Implantation. The
Cardiology Service caters for a wide range of acute cardiac conditions. The department is
operated 24/7 and has the capacity to admit elective and emergency conditions.
How can I access the Cardiology services?
You can access the hospital’s cardiac services through:
1. GP referral - All access to Cardiac Services is through GP Referral. Your GP can refer
you to a Consultant’s Clinic, where waiting times are short
2. If you have a more urgent need your GP can refer you directly to The Rapid Access
Chest Pain Clinic
3. Your GP can also refer you directly to the MAU Unit
The Rapid Access Chest Pain Clinic is a facility for patients with chest pain that require
investigation and treatment. This consultant provided service is available Monday to Friday.
All patients are seen on the day of referral. If assessment indicates that a patient should be
admitted to the hospital, this will be arranged promptly. If deemed appropriate a patient can
be
transferred immediately to the Catheterisation Laboratory. Call 021 4941942.
Access to Cardiology services is also possible through our Medical Assessment Unit
(MAU). This unit is a consultant provided service, headed by Prof. Ronan O’Sullivan. The
Medical Assessment Unit at the Bon Secours Hospital Cork is open Monday - Friday
8am to 6pm, by GP Referral. Call 021 4801604.
