Sample Images of the Earth Images courtesy: http://visibleearth.nasa.gov/ “Blue Marble” Definitions: Hydrosphere? Geosphere? Cryosphere? Biosphere? Atmosphere? Lithosphere Layer of the earth on which we live. We live on the top layer of the lithosphere, the crust. The lithosphere is made up of the crust and the thin upper layer of the mantle which is solid. Since most of the mantle is hot liquid which flows, the lithosphere is able to slide along top. Atmosphere Layers of the Atmosphere Troposphere: Layer in which we live, gases are denser and temp is higher closer to Earth Stratosphere: Holds 19% of Earth’s gases, ozone is formed here, planes can be found in this area. Mesosphere: Gases become thinner, meteors burn up here Thermosphere: Known as the upper atmosphere, gases are very thin, UV radiation and x-rays are absorbed, satellites Layers of the Atmosphere Mt.
