They became war heroes because for their boldness and bravery. A protectorate is an independent country but under the control of another country. A territory is completely controlled by another country. It showed the world that the U.S. could now easily defeat one of the world’s stronger navies, which meant that it could hold its own against any world power. Also, by acquiring several new important territories, the U.S. became an empire and joined other world powers in the fight to acquire territories in the Pacific and the Caribbean and trading rights in Asia. Remember the Maine o McKinley sent the Maine to Havana to protect Americans citizens and property o February 15, 1898 a huge explosion killed 260 officers and crew members American papers blamed the Spanish and wanted war with Spain o McKinley told the Spanish to end the brutality against the Cubans McKinley recognized Cuban independence Spain met some of the demands, not enough April 25, 1898- declared war with Spain Triggered the Spanish American War War in Philippines: May 1, 1898 George Dewey attacked the Spanish at Manila Bay and destroyed most of the Spanish ships o American troops arrived in July and with rebels led by Emilio Aguinaldo captured the city of Manila Fighting in Cuba- May 19, Spanish troops entered the harbor of Santiago and were blockaded by U.S. ships o 17000 American troops, mostly AA, went ashore and drove off the Spanish soldiers- heavy fighting took place Rough Riders- Roosevelt resigned his position as assistant secretary of the navy to join the fighting. o Led the first regiment of U.S. Cavalry Volunteers- former cowhands and college students known as the Rough Riders o Won the Battle of San Juan Hill o Two days later the Spanish tried to leave Santiago Harbor, Spanish fleet was destroyed (4 hours) o U.S. turned their attention to Puerto Rico, quickly took control of island o August 12, Spanish signed an armistice and ended the war Acquisitions o Cuba became an American protectorate 1901- U.S. granted full independence under certain circumstances Platt Amendment- cuba couldn’t make treaties with other countries U.S. could interfere in Cuban affairs if it threatened ind. o Puerto Rico and Guam became territories 1917- Jones Act made Puerto Rico territory, all granted citizenship o Spain surrendered the Philippines for $20 million Many wanted them, but many did not Rebellions for independence, 4000 Americans died, 200,000 Filipino soldiers and civilians died Summer 1901, US transferred govt. to civilian run govt. 1946- Philippines gained independence
