There are 4 inner planets. The inner planets move slowly because they are rocky. The inner planets are also referred to as terrestrial planets because they have a hard surface. 3 Venus • Did you know Venus is hotter than Mercury even though Mercury is closer to the sun? This happens because Venus has a thick cloud that is like a greenhouse. Venus is named after the Roman god of love and beauty. There is sand, volcanoes and mountains. Venus has no moons. 4 Dwarf Planets • Did you know there are 5 known Dwarf Planets in our solar system? They are Pluto, Eris, Ceres, Haumea and Makemake. Dwarf planets are too small to clear their neighborhoods because they are mixed in with asteroids. Eris is the biggest Dwarf Planet in our solar system. Pluto has three moons. The mantle layer on Ceres could contain more fresh water than Earth’s surface! 5 The Outer Planets • Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are Outer Planets. Jupiter is the biggest planet in our solar system. The Outer Planets move quickly because they are made of gas and they are called gas giants. All Outer Planets have rings. 6 Saturn • This: is the symbol for Saturn. Saturn is the sixth planet from the sun and since it is an Outer Planet, it is made of gases. Saturn is the second largest planet in the solar system. It is 74,899 miles wide (120,535 kilometers). 7 Neptune • This: is the symbol for Neptune. A day on Neptune is 16 hours and 7 minutes. It is 2,797 million miles from the sun and has 13 moons. Triton is Neptune’s largest moon and is 1,678 miles wide. 8 Fast Facts • In the solar system, there are 172 known moons. • If there was an ocean big enough for Neptune, it would float because Neptune is made out of gas. 9
