Moisture intrusion is the leading cause of deterioration
to chimneys and other masonry structures. When left
unattended, moisture will eventually cause problems
such as cracking, spalling, scaling, freeze-thaw damage
or just annoying leaks. Two challenges face homeowners
when weatherproofing masonry structures. First, moisture
must be prevented from entering the masonry. Second,
moisture that has already entered the structure must be
allowed to escape.
Most sealers are just that, sealers. They prevent moisture
from entering the masonry, but also seal in the existing
moisture. This trapped moisture will eventually cause
costly damage. Unlike typical masonry sealers, WaterTite
Masonry Water Repellent is 100% vapor permeable.
Our proprietary blend of siloxanes provide unsurpassed
protection from water penetration while allowing
moisture vapor in the masonry to escape. All masonry is
porous. Think of a microscopic masonry pore as a small
tunnel with openings both front and rear. When properly
treated, WaterTite absorbs deep into the pore and seals the
walls of the pore. Typical sealers seal the opening to the
pore preventing moisture vapor from escaping. During a
rain, water absorbs up to a 1/2 inch into a masonry pore.
Once the water enters the pore, WaterTite prevents that
water from absorbing into the structure through the pore
wall. However, the openings at the front and back of the
pore remain open allowing moisture vapor to escape. This
permeability is imperative when treating any exposed
structure where moisture is present.
