COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Fundamentals of Green Building Design and Construction.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
1

The purpose of this course is to give the student an overview of design and construction
delivery systems for high performance green buildings. The US Green Building Council
(USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) will be reviewed in
some detail along with sustainability evaluation systems, the vocabulary associated
with green buildings, and an understanding of the physical limitations of the materials
studied.

Construction Materials and Processes Examines the materials used to construct a
variety of structures, highways, utilities, and residential buildings. Includes terminology;
interpretation of plans; and specifications to assure that correct materials are ordered,
applied, and utilized. Methods of identifying materials delivered to the job site,
methods of handling, (Quality Control) procedures for testing, and inspection of private
and government work will be emphasized. Special emphasis will be given to the
relationship of each material to the Uniform Building Codes.

Building Green Buildings - The Contractor's Perspective: The purpose of this course is to
provide construction professionals with information that will help them to effectively
bid, contract, build, and close out green building projects. We will explore the green
building process from the contractor's and subcontractor's point of view. You will learn
how to work with an outside commissioning authority to complete the job.

New Construction - Applying the Guidelines. The course reviews the Leadership in
Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Credit System. The foundation of the course
will identify and help to understand the objectives of sustainable sites, water efficiency,
energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, and
innovation and design process credits and prerequisites. Focus is placed on a systematic
view of green building, sustainability, low-impact development, and storm water issues.

Green Building Commissioning This course studies techniques to achieve the goals of
green building standards during and beyond the construction of the building. It reviews
the make-up of smart buildings and the incorporation of commissioning throughout the
building lifecycle. Students will learn to identify and understand the objectives of
integrated systems into building automation and the use of commissioning to verify the
system performance. Focus is placed on understanding the interrelationship between
the systems and monitoring for peak performance.
Basic material Information:

Industrial materials recycling also referred to as beneficial use, means reusing or recycling byproduct materials generated from industrial processes. These materials can be used as
substitutions for raw materials in the manufacture of consumer products, roads, bridges,
buildings, and other construction projects. Thousands of manufacturing and industrial processes
and electric utility generators create hundreds of millions of tons of non-hazardous industrial
materials that are often wasted.

Non-hazardous industrial materials, such as coal ash, foundry sand, construction and demolition
materials, slags, and gypsum, are valuable products of industrial processes. Each material may
be recycled in a variety of diverse applications. These materials have many of the same chemical
and physical properties as the virgin materials they replace — they can even improve the quality
of a product. For example, the use of coal fly ash can enhance the strength and durability of
concrete. Putting these commodities into productive use saves resources and energy, reduces
green-house gas emissions, and contributes to a sustainable future.
Industrial materials recycling:

2
Preserves our natural resources by decreasing the demand for virgin materials;
Conserves energy and reduces greenhouse gas emissions by decreasing the demand for
products made from energy intensive manufacturing processes; and saves money by
decreasing disposal costs for the generator and decreasing materials costs for end users.
Used Tyre construction
Earth Brick and Block structures
Earth Quake resistant footing, using green materials
Modest home footing:
Using a light weight, accurate, aluminium form, for building a versatile style reinforced beam
footing, would be the cheapest and easiest method in building an earth quake resistant
compressed earth home. Using precision pressed blocks along with a precision, reinforced
footing would help in building high quality structures.

manufactured soil and agricultural building materials.
Instructor – James F Hayden: MSc construction Management, Certified Licensed, registered masonry
Engineer Information Technologists MIA
This onsite training is aimed at not only resident project representatives on construction projects, but
also project managers, contract administrators, architects, engineers, owners, and supervisory and field
management personnel. The focus is on the resident project representative and his interaction with all
these parties and the problems they encounter and must resolve. The training analyses the construction
process to include project delivery systems, documentation, responsibilities, authorities, specifications,
preconstruction operations, scheduling, construction operations, risk allocation, and information
technology. Attendees will learn procedures and contract specification language that help minimize
disputes and avoid claims.
