Infectious Diseases Policy
Brighton Primary School
1542
Health and wellbeing is a priority at Brighton Primary School. Notifiable infectious diseases are
managed according to the Department of Health and Human Services of Victoria.
The Public Health and Wellbeing Regulations 2009 require children with certain infectious diseases,
and children who have been in contact with certain infectious diseases, to be excluded for school for a
specified time.
The aim of this policy is to reduce the risk of spread of vaccine preventable infectious diseases through
the school community, and notify the community when they have been exposed and at risk.
Guidelines
The Victorian Government requires notification for the following vaccine preventable diseases:
o Heamophilus influenza type B infection
o Influenza
o Measles
o Meningococcal infection
o Mumps
o Pertussis (whooping cough)
o Pneumococcal infection (IPD)
o Rubella
o Tetanus
o Varicella zoster (chickenpox, shingles)
A person in charge of a primary school must not allow a child to attend the primary school for the
period according to Schedule 7. http://ideas.health.vic.gov.au/guidelines/school-exclusion-table.asp
Implementation
1. If a child is diagnosed with a vaccine preventable infectious condition, the parent must provide
a medical certificate to state the diagnosis and the exclusion period required from school. This
must be dated and signed by the treating doctor.
2. The parent is to notify the school nurse when the diagnosis is made.
3. The school nurse must notify persons in the school community who may be at risk of infection
and ensure guidelines of exclusion are adhered to.
This policy was last ratified by School Council in July 2015.
To be reviewed in 2018.
