Does Finland have strengths in Artificial Intelligence? Finnish Artificial Intelligence competences – An international benchmark Patent and Technology analysis Publication Seminar: 24.10.2016 klo 1416, Airo Island, Viikintie 1, Helsinki Free for publication on 24.10.2016, 14:00 hours Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Ry Hannes Toivanen, Teqmine Analytics Oy Artificial Intelligence Most important emerging technologies *Projection based on data until 1st of August 2016 Key conclusions and recommendations • • • • • • Finnish Artificial Competencies are not sufficient in interational comparison Finland's status as a pioneer in AI is dissipating Finnish expertise in AI is narrow and not focussed on future growth areas Large Finnish companies are investing relatively little in AI technologies – Startups have a critical role Without strong leadership Finland will not be able to exploit near future business and technology opportunities in AI Finland needs clear national strategy to advance AI Why Airo and Teqmine have analyzed the technology and business landscape of AI • • • • The future competitiveness of Finnish economy and society depends in great degree on AI capabilities The need of societal and business renewal has been underestimated in Finland Development of Finland's competitiveness requires determined effort and situation analysis Finnish ”Digitalization” debate needs concretia and clarity What is AI and software robotics, and why they matter for Finland? • • • • Artificial Intelligence is a technology, whereby machines can learn unsupervised or semi supervised, often significantly more efficiently than human beings Artificial Intelligence is the core of Digitalization and Internet of Things, as it adds ”smartness” to things and service Platform Economy: Disrupts the business logic of industries Biggest future markets Competition for global leadership New and old sources of Innovation • • Finland is dropping in international rankings South Korea, Israel, Holland, Switzerland and Sweden improve their rankings *2016 data only until 31.7.2016 Finland and key competitors – Index based change20022016 2002=100 *2016 data until 31.7.2016 • • • Finland is not faring well among key competitor countries Finland has lost status as a pioneer country In recent years, total patenting increases faster than Finnish patenting Internet of Things: Application of AI in different technology areas • • AI is rapidly being diffused from traditional computer related areas to new appliation areas IoT is about AI diffusing to new application areas • Key future application areas: Management and administration, Sensors and Control, Traffic, Medicine and Health Care, Buildings, Consumer Devises, etc Globally leading AI firms • • Artificial Intelligence is the centra investment areas for world's largest technology firms Startups are also important, but the industry is relatively mature • • • IoToffers significant growth opportunities for software firms Competition for leadership is intense Investments into AI will continue to grow the next 35 years Largest and fastest growing AI application areas • Technology and Business frontiers of Artificial Intelligence – • • Teqmine has divided AI technologies into 25 technology and business areas with its artificial intelligence solutionson Identify key innovation frontiers How Finland participates in global growth Wireless Devises, Software and Network Traffic (Topic 16) • • • Finnish patenting about. 38 patents per year In Finland practically only Nokia • • Finland does not participate broadly in the globally emerging technology Global leaders: Microsoft, IBM, Google, AT&T, Nokia Virtual Reality – User Interfaces, Control, Experience (Topic 1) • • • One of the fastest growing new areas Finnish patenting very small , only 13 patents per year Only one Finnish based inventor and firm resposnible for majority of Finnish inventions (Imerj) • • Finland does not participate broadly to the global innovation frontier Global leaders: Microsoft, Samsung, Imerj, Z124, Magic Leap Smart Vehicles and Traffic (Topic 3) • • Finnish patenting nonexistent Key countries: USA, Canada, Germany, Japan, South Korea, France, UK, Israel • • Future business: Technology not yet mature, and likely to grow significantly in the near term Global leaders: Google, Boeing, GM, Ford, GE... Smart Patient and Health Systems (Topic 11) • • Small but growing Finnish area of expertise Key countries: USA, Canada, Germany, UK, Israel, India, the Netherlands, Switzerland • • Future business: Technology not yet mature, and likely to grow significantly in the near term Global leaders: IBM, Cognitive Scale, GE, Siemens Medical, Philips Finnish special challenges • • • • Exploitation of AI opportunities requires more effort from Finnish industry Finnish capabilities in Artificial Intelligence is are smaller than anticipated Finland is not participating sufficiently in globally significant AI innovation frontiers Finland risks losing its international competitiveness in AI AI expertise in Finland is very concentrated – A comparison with Sweden • • • • Nokia and IMERJ are responsible for the majority of inventions in Finland About 90 Finnish have applied for AI patent at the USPTO Startups are an important applicant group in Finland • • • Swedish inventions come from a broad base About 110 Swedish firms ave applied for AI patent at the USPTO Large firms are an important and key applicant group in Sweden Expertise Profile of Sweden and Finland Swedish AISweden Patenting 2013-2015 Finland Computer technology Measurement Audio-visual technology IT methods for management Medical technology Electrical machinery, apparatus, energy Swedish and Finnish AI patents in key techology main groups 2014-2016 • • Expertise profiles are not too different, but Swedish expertise is more broadbased: Measurement, Biotechnology, Medical technology, Transport Digital communication Control Telecommunications Biotechnology Transport Pharmaceuticals Conclusions and Recommendations Conclusions • • • • • • Artificial Intelligence technology and Business are growing rapidly New Verticals, that is specialized application areas are important nexuses for rapid growth Nokia has made Finland into a pioneer of AI, but this advantage is disappearing Finnish AI expertise is narrow. Dismantling of Nokia depencey requires special actions. The prospects of Finnish firms for future business in AI are weakened by the strong positions gained by international competitors Startups are important for Finnish AI expertise and large firms (excl. Nokia) are too careful about investing in the area Recommendations • • • • • • Instead of national debate, concrete actions are needed. A national AI strategy is needed. Actions must facilitate the creation of AI expertise and skills to apply AI in emerging business areas Finland must become global leader in AI Public policies must be revised, but of critical importance is new strategy by the leading Finnish industries Top management of the largest Finnish companies must recognize AI based future business opportunities more clearly Startups and large firms must cooperate more in AI Authors and Contact details • Hannes Toivanen is the CEO of Teqmine Analytics Ltd.
