Dependent and Independent Events
NSTRUCTIONS: Decide whether the following events are independent or dependent events. Write your answer in
the space provided.
1. Mrs.
Eskew draws two student names from a shoe box and awards each of the two students a prize. 2. Martinique
draws a coin from his pocket, replaces it, and then draws another coin from his pocket.

3. Without
putting the cards back into the deck, Pablo draws two cards from a deck of 52 cards.
dependent
4. Breanna
puts her three friends’ names in a hat then draws two names to decide who to invite to her party.
dependent
5. You
choose to eat chocolate ice cream at the ice cream shop.

INSTRUCTIONS: Find the probability.
6. Cecilia
is teaching her sister a new magic trick. If she asks her sister to draw a card from the deck,
what is the probability that she will draw a king?
7. There
are 12 girls and 13 boys in choir. The choir director is choosing two people to sing a duet
together. What is the probability that the choir director will choose two boys to sing the duet?
8. Johnny
has 4 quarters and 5 dimes in his pocket. If he draws out only one coin from his pocket, what
is the probability that he will draw a dime?

Dependent and Independent Events
INSTRUCTIONS: Use the bag of marbles below for #11 and #12.
11. What
is the probability of drawing a blue marble from the bag above, without replacing it,
and then drawing a red marble? 12. What
is the probability of drawing a red marble from the bag above, without replacing it, and then
drawing a green marble?
HINT
An independent event is when you have two events and the
probability of one event occurring does not affect the probability of
the second event occurring.
A dependent event is when you have two events and the
probability of one event occurring does affect the probability of the
second event occurring.

Probability
An independent event is when you have two events and the
probability of one event occurring does not affect the probability of
the second event occurring.
For two independent events, A and B, find the probability of both
events occurring by multiplying the probability of the first event, A,
by the probability of the second event, B.
P ( A, then B ) = P ( A) • P ( B )
P - probability
A - the first event
B - the second event
A dependent event is when you have two events and the
probability of one event occurring does affect the probability of the
second event occurring.
For two dependent events, A and B, find the probability of both
events occurring by multiplying the probability of the first event, A,
by the probability of the second event, B, after the first event, A,
occurs.
P ( A, then B ) = P ( A) • P ( B after A)
