Number Line Activities
Grade 7 and 8 Number Line Placement Challenge
Draw a large number line on the chalkboard/dry-erase board.
Assign values to group on a Post-It or allow group to choose values from board.
Students may add and draw reference points or marks whenever needed to help with placing
numbers on number line.
Have students work together to place values on a number line.
Possible values:
1/2, 4, -2.8,  -3, 9/3, square root of 2, -2 3/4, 3-2 , 2.35, -3 5/8
Extension Activity
Algebra Number Line
Assign one Post-It value to each individual. One at a time, each person in the group places a Post-It
value on number line.
Use color points or vertical marks to designate exact spot where the Post-It belongs on number line
Create large number line on draw erase board. Then add a 0 (zero) to the center first.
Student with the “X” post-it is to randomly place the “X”where they think it belongs.
Possible values:
x, 3x, –x, x/2, x–4, - x2 + 2, 0, 1, x+3, 1/x , y, x+y, xy, –x2
Vocabulary:

Coefficient
Questions for discussion:
Is placement possible?
Is that location the only place where that value could go?
If we change the value of x, how will the other values change?
Probability Number Line
Probability of event always occurs between 0 – 1.

Example:
10 total marbles in a bag: 1 red, 6 blue, 3 yellow
What is the probability of pulling out a red marble from the bag?
Describe how likely it is to pull out a red marble from the bag.
Using a number line helps students to visualize the concept of the probability of an
event occurring.
