AN ANALYSIS OF THE MORAL VALUE REFLECTED IN THE FILM “3 IDIOTS” BASED ON ITS INTRINSIC VALUE Elina [email protected] ENGLISH EDUCATION PROGRAM LANGUAGE AND ARTS DEPARTEMENT STKIP SILIWANGI BANDUNG ABSTRACT The objectives of this research entitled “An Analysis of the Moral Value Reflected in the Film 3 Idiots based on its Intrinsic Value” were to know the moral value and to know the beneficial inputs of analyzing intrinsic value of the movie. The research method used in research was descriptive qualitative method. The population was 632dialogues and the sample of this research was entire populations that were focus on related to intrinsic value and conclude the moral. The data were collected by downloading the movie script from internet, and the data were analyzed by reading, identifying, classifying, analyzing, and interpreting moral value based on Pojman’s theory and intrinsic value based on Abram’s theory . The instrument of this research was list of questions designed based on the elements of the movie plus the answers the written on pieces of colorful paper. The result of this research showed that theme of the film was life was not be easy and it caused the main character to get the problem and the main characters named Ranco, Farhan, Raju, Pia, Chatur, and Virus as the main characters. The characterizations was Rancho, farhan, raju, pia as Ptotagonist and chatur an Virus as antoginist. The setting in the story was in India, covering in the exposition that described the life of main character, rising action described When Rancho falls in love with Pia (Virus daughters) and Virus get angry he try to break Rancho friendship, climax described when everyone else was busy with their friends and families, Rancho quietly slips out of enjoying a lot, and disappears from their life. Falling action described Raju and Farhan tried to find Rancho for five years with no result. And the resolution described Pia and Rancho rekindles their love. It can be concluded that the elements of the film is interesting, it can be described easily. The beneficial inputs of analyzing the moral value of this film were can be used instructional media to learn English and for future teacher, the activity of studying film was very fruitful. Key words: Film, Moral Value, 3 idiots A. BACKGROUND As future teacher, we have to know many subject, one of them is literature. Studying literature is very important for future teachers because we can improve our knowledge, our vocabulary, pronunciation, we can learn the culture of other nation, character. Literature is identical to language, since literature uses language to pass information, opinion or ideas, through the expression of feelings and thought stated in literary work. Literary works consists of three parts : they are poetry, prose, and play or drama (Handout, 2010). In modern era, film is known as a part of literary works as it is said that drama is a play on TV, theatre or cinema, the other hand reason why film is admitted as a development of drama, which automatically makes film to be possibly called literary work is that movie is made by using artistic technique and involves many things related to literary works. As future teacher, later in the future the writer should give much knowledge to build student character. For example, by explaining the moral value of film, he can tell his future student that life is never going to be easy; they need strong will and guts to achieve their dreams. And they believe everything will be all right. B. LITERATURE REVIEW Robert and Jacob (2993:1) say that “Literature means the compositions that tell stories, dramatize situation, express emotion, analyze and advocated ideas”. According to the writer’s experience when attending class, literature in the narrow sense is a piece of writing valued as works of art compared to technique language. 1. The definition of Film According to Honbry (2003:496) Film is a series moving picture recorded with sound that tells a story. ought to live, with the idea of the good and with such concept right and wrong, good or bad. 2. Elements/Intrinsic value Intrisic value is a part of Abram’s theory (1990) which is used for analyzing the literary work,there are included into the intrinsic value of the film those are theme, plot, character, setting, point of view. C. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY In this research the writer used a descriptive qualitative method which includes analyzing, describing, explaining, and interpreting the data. According to MacMillan (2001:395) qualitative research described and analyzed people’s individual, and collective social actions, beliefs, thoughts, and perceptions, MacMillan also says in research in education that qualitative studied are important for theory generation, policy, development, practice improvement, illumination of social issues, and action stimulus. The declaration about means, that in qualitative research, we not compare anything. a. Theme According to M.H Abrams (1999) the theme is sometimes used interchangeable with “motif’ but the term is more, usefully applied on a general concept or doctrine, whether implicit or asserted, which an imaginative work is designed to involve and make persuasive to the reader. b. Characters M.H Abram said the characters are the persons represented in a dramatic or narrative work. Who are interpreted by the reader as possessing particular moral, intellectual, and emotional, qualities by inferences from what the person’s say and their distinctive ways of saying it – the dialogue – and from what they do – the action. c. Plot According to Kimtafsirah (2011), plot is series of events it is divided into five stages. Those are: Exposition, Rising action, Climax, Falling action and Resolution. d. Setting Abram states that the overall setting of a narrative or dramatic work is the general locate, historical time, and social circumstances in which its action occurs, the setting or a single episode or science within the work is the particular physical location in which it takes place. e. Point of view According to Abrams point of view signifies the way a story gets told – the mode (or modes) establish by an author by means of whom the reader is presented with the character dialogues, actions, setting, and event which constitute the narrative in a work of fiction. 3. Definition Moral Value Pojman (1990:2) say “morality refers to the principle of conduct of both actual moralities, the best justified or true moral system”. The writer conclude that morality refer to the principle that deal with how we Research Population According to Crowl (1996;15) population is an entire groupof people,object or events which researches wishes to apply the finding of study. The population of this resarch was 632 dialogues of the film 3 Idiots. Research Sample Samples are subjects of people used to represent populations (Crowl, 1996:15). The sample of this research was entire populations that were focus on related to intrinsic value and conclude the moral. Research Instrument The instrument used for collecting the data covers. Questions which are designed based on the elements of the film, those are : 1. What is the theme that you get after watching the film entitled “3 Idiots”? 2. Mentioned the elements of intrinsic value in the film “3 Idiots”? 3. Write the main characters who was figure in the film entitled “3 Idiots”? 4. What the moral value can you get after watched the film entitled “3 Idiots”? Research Data Collection In this research to get the data, the writer used document analysis, to help completed the research: she provides the intrinsic value of the film. Data Analysis The collected data were identifie, classified, and analyzed based on the intrinsic value/ the element of literature. to find out the moral value on film “3 Idots” D. FINDINGS AND DISCUSSIONS In this chapter the writer, describes and discusses the data of the research findings. The data then identified, classify, analyzed, interpreted, and presented in the following tables based on moral values. 1. Theme In this film the writer took the theme of the film which is described in this expressions “live is never going to be easy” so we need strong will. And always believe everything will be alright. But one day of their graduation, when everyone else was busy with their friends and families, Rancho quietly slips out of enjoying a lot, and disappears from their life. d. Falling action This story is framed as intermittent Flashback from the present day, ten years after Chatur vowed that he’d become more successful than Rancho. Raju and Farhan tried to find Rancho for five years with no result. With Chatur’s help, they travel to the Chhanchad estate in Shimla , where they find a completely different man: the real Ranchhoddas Chhanchad. e. Resolution While Chatur mocks his rival and makes him sign a “declaration of defeat”. When Rancho/Chhote reveals his true name, Phunsukh, a mortified Chatur accepts his own defeat and pleads with phunsukh to forgive him and accept his company’s contract. Phunsukh, Pia, Farhan and Raju run laughing into the distance as Chatur begs him to sign the contract and save Chatur’s job. f. Point of view In film 3 Idiots the authors used the third point of view because the actor used “I”, “You”, “He”, “She”. g. E.CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTION Based on the data above,the writer draw the conclusions and the suggestions as follows: 1. Conclusion a. By conducting the research, the writer can have more understanding of the film which actually comes trough literary work (play, drama or novel). b. Being the future teacher, she can guide her students to read and understand the literary work better. 2. Suggestions After discussing the fining of the research an describing the conclusions, the writer would like to give some suggestions related to the moral value. The first, for future teacher the writer suggest to research about literary work since it is interesting and helpful for us. Moreover, it can be used for; learning and comprehending the good and bad morals value reflected in the film.
