The Layers of the Earth! Earth Layers • The Earth is divided into four main layers. Crust Mantle Outer Core Inner Core Temperature increases as depth increases The Crust The Earth’s crust is like the skin of an apple. It is very thin compared to the other three layers. The crust makes up 1% of the Earth(30 km thick). Temperature- 0 to over 100 Celsius The Crust Made up of large amounts of silicon and aluminum (Common rocks: Basalt and Granite) Two types of crust: oceanic crust and continental crust Composed of plates on which the continents and oceans rest Continental Crust Made of Granite Thick (10-70km) Buoyant (less dense or lighter than oceanic crust) Mostly old rock Oceanic Crust Made of Basalt Thin (~7 km) Dense or heavier (sinks under continental crust) Young rock The Mantle Gives earth a magnetic field The mantle is the largest layer of the Earth (2,870 km thick). Composition-silicon,magnesium, iron, and aluminum Temperature- 500-4,000 Celsius The mantle is divided into two regions: the upper (lithosphere) and lower (asthenosphere) sections. Lithosphere Crust+upper mantle Lithospheric plates aka plate tectonic found here Sits on top of the asthenosphere Asthenosphere Layer of hotter soft rock similar to tar Convection Currents which causes plates to move occur here Convection currents are caused by the heating and cooling of molten rock Core Center of the earth that is super dense or heavy Composition- Iron and Nickel 3,450 km thick Temperature- 2,2005000 Celsius Composed of outer and inner core Outer Core The core of the Earth is like a ball of very hot metals. The outer core is liquid. The outer core is made up of iron and is very dense or heavy. Inner Core The inner core of the Earth has temperatures and pressures so great that the metals are squeezed together and are not able to move. The inner core is a solid. Review 1) What are the four layers of the Earth? 2) The Earth’s crust is very ______? 3) The mantle is the largest layer of the Earth? True or False 4) Is the Outer Core a liquid or a solid? Answers! 1) Crust, Mantle, Outer Core, Inner Core 2) Thin 3) True 4) Liquid
