The Movement Takes a New Turn Chapter 28 Section 5 Malcolm X and Black Nationalism • Malcolm Little joins the Nation of Islam while in prison – preached black separation and self‐help • Elijah Muhammad – Black Nationalism • Malcolm X opposed to integration • After a pilgrimage to Mecca, Malcolm splits from the Nation – forms his own group • Assassinated in 1965 The Black Power Movement • SNCC becomes more radical following Stokely Carmichaels arrest – sick of nonviolent protest – black power • The Black Panther – new militant political party • Both groups saw the NAACP as too moderate Riots in the Streets • Originally fighting de jure segregation – later moved fighting de facto segregation • Even though segregation ended blacks still experienced discrimination • Fed up with conditions riots struck out in Rochester, NYC, Watts, and several cities in NJ Tragedy Strikes in 1968 • MLK assassinated April 4, 1968 • Violence exploded in over 120 cities as a reaction • Robert Kennedy also assassinated July 1968 Legacy of the Movement • Although violence followed, significant changes did follow in terms of political and social rights
