UNIVERSTY OF SİİRT FACULTY OF VETERINARY MEDICINE DIVISION PRE-CLINICAL SCIENCES DEPARTMENT VIROLOGY LECTURES OF THE DEPARTMENT AND TEXT BOOK(S) TEACHING METHOD USING UNIT AND / OR MATERIAL VIROLOGY-I VIROLOGY-II ZOONOTIC VIRAL DISEASES (ELECTIVE) GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE DEPARTMENT EDUCATION GOALS OF THE DEPARTMENT Lectures, ppt presentation and practical works The Department of Virology offers a study program for the second, third and fifth year veterinary students in order to provide them with new knowledge and skills in virology that are essential for the study and practice of veterinary medicine. In fifth year, the students spend full year as intern and are given instructional and laboratory teaching about viral infections. In our department there are various kinds of research interests. The topics of the studied subjects are viral diseases of domestic animals, their diagnosis, epidemiology and immunology. Research and development of diagnostic methods and efficient preventive methods against viral diseases and epidemiologic studies in Turkey are major goals of the Virology Department. Using cell culture, molecular, immunochemical and biotechnological methods, the qualities of animal viruses are recognised and novel diagnostic procedures are developed. Viral diseases in ruminants, particularly Bovine Herpesvirus type 1 (BHV-1), Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus (BVD-MD), Bovine Leukemia Virus (BLV), Bluetongue Virus (BTV), Bovine Rotavirus, Coronavirus, Bovine Herpesvirus type 4 (BHV-4) Border Disease (BD), Coryza Gangrnosa Bovum (CGB), Kırım Kongo Hemorrhagic Fever, Equine Herpesvirus type 1-4 diseases are investigated at present. The purpose of the studies is to develop and to use procedures and diagnostic methods as basic preconditions for health improvement and prevention of this infection in populations of ruminants in our region and country.
