Sexual function change after conization for cervical dysplasia

------------------------------------Introduction : Conization remove the cervical tissue that have abundant nerve. The impact of conization on female
sexual function is controversial. The procedure appears to have a decreasing effect on sexual function, but psychologic
anxiety may be most important adverse effect on sexual function change. The aim of our study is to assess sexual
function change after conization, measuring sexual function before and after procedure using Female Sexual Function
Index (FSFI) according to the degree of anxiety.
Materials and Methods : From February 2006 to October 2010, sexually active women who had undergone conization at
the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Korea university Guro hospital were enrolled. Seventy-seven patients
agreed to participate. Before the procedure, participant was interviewed regarding their sexual function by using FSFI,
and regarding anxiety trait by using state anxiety inventory (STAI). At the 6 months follows-up at least after surgery,
each women were asked to sexual function by using FSFI questionnaire. The FSFI collects information about six
domains for female sexuality (desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, satisfaction, pain) and it offers also a final total score.
The STAI is an introspective psychological inventory consisting of 40 self-report items pertaining to anxiety affect. At the
6 months follow-up after conization, we compared the scores obtained before and after the procedure.
Results : The patients with anxiety for sex after conization had the changes in all aspects of sexual function than those
who without anxiety for sex. The patients who had mild anxiety trait showed sexual function changes in arousal, orgasm,
dyspareunia, and satisfaction than those who did not have anxiety trait.
Conclusion : Sexual function changes after conization were noted in desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, dyspareunia,
overall satisfaction and frequency in patients with anxiety for sex when compared with those who without anxiety to
sexual intercourse. So the most important thing is to do reducing anxiety about the sex, or disease.
