Barnardo's Cymru Seraf Service Safety Plan By the point in a child’s life where they are being abused through sexual exploitation, they are subject to a complex pattern of life experiences which impact negatively on each dimension of their life. The below safety and individual work plans are aimed and supporting professionals work with young people to help keep them safe. Safety Plan needs to: Focus on reducing risks and increasing protective factors Ensure the young person remains central to the safety plan Ensure clear missing procedures and protocols are in place. Where necessary work with young person to come up with their own time boundaries and ensure these are adhered. All missing episodes must be reported to the Police. Log how the young person presents on returning to placement i.e.: times and dates to assess patterns, whether under the influence of drugs or alcohol, appearance of clothing and self including any bruising, emotional state i.e. withdrawn or aggressive Awareness of mobile phone and internet use as these are used as methods of grooming young people – gather numbers were possible and email addresses Gather intelligence around young person’s social networks including: names; nicknames; addresses; car details; registrations numbers, make, model and colour Ensure that all intelligence/concerns are reported as a matter of urgency to Social Services and the Police Ensure young person is supported to access appropriate services including: drug and alcohol programmes; sexual health clinics and mental health support Ensure that the young person is given opportunities to explore alternative leisure and recreational activities Page 1 of 2 Ensure direct work is undertaken with young person as highlighted in the work plan An individual work plan should: Support young persons recovery from abuse through Child Sexual Exploitation via therapeutic intervention/support Increase young persons understanding and knowledge of the grooming process Delivery of one-to-one sessions covering, for example: personal safety; recognising harmful and healthy relationships; risk-taking behaviors including distinguishing between healthy and harmful risks; protective behaviors and how to ask for help; attitudes to sex and relationships; promoting assertiveness and building self-esteem All work to be carried out in a multi-agency approach Page 2 of 2
