Because the German army had marched into Poland and Britain’s treaty

The Battle of the Coral Sea was an important battle fought off the coast of
Queensland in May 1942. It was a joint action involving Australian and American
battleships and planes, and is famous for being the first sea battle fought where
the enemies could not see each other. The battle stopped the Japanese reaching
Port Moresby.

Australian accepted the sending of conscripted overseas because it was directly
threatened by the closeness of the Japanese army. It was hoped that the Japanese
would be defeated before they reached Australia’s shore, as it was predicted that
fighting on Australian land would cause a huge loss of civilian life.

The country was incredibly rough, muddy and inaccessible; supplies had to be
carried for miles; soldiers endured illness and discomfort because of the hot,
tropical conditions in the jungle.

During the war Indigenous soldiers were treated more fairly than they had ever
been, some even receiving equal pay with white soldiers, however, after the war,
many returned soldiers found that racist attitudes had not altered.

6 June 1944: D-Day marked the beginning of the Allied campaign to drive
Germany back across occupied Europe.

The dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki on 6 and 9 August
forced the Japanese to surrender. The impact of these bombings was devastating
and the destruction so absolute that Victory in the Pacific was celebrated on 14
August 1945.
