The battle stopped the Japanese reaching Port Moresby. 10 Australian accepted the sending of conscripted overseas because it was directly threatened by the closeness of the Japanese army. It was hoped that the Japanese would be defeated before they reached Australia’s shore, as it was predicted that fighting on Australian land would cause a huge loss of civilian life. 11 Winston Churchill, John Curtin, Adolf Hitler, Franklin D Roosevelt 12 The country was incredibly rough, muddy and inaccessible; supplies had to be carried for miles; soldiers endured illness and discomfort because of the hot, tropical conditions in the jungle. 13 Possible new roles include farming work, heavy industrial work in factories, security work, railway work, work as radio operators and mechanics. 14 During the war Indigenous soldiers were treated more fairly than they had ever been, some even receiving equal pay with white soldiers, however, after the war, many returned soldiers found that racist attitudes had not altered.
