Name: Date: Abraham Lincoln Directions: Read the passage. Then answer the questions. Born in 1809 to the son of a Kentucky farmer in a one-room log cabin, Lincoln had to struggle for a living and for learning. Lincoln made great efforts to attain knowledge while working on his farm, splitting rails for fences, and keeping store at New Salem, Illinois. Lincoln married Mary Todd, daughter of a slave-owning family from Kentucky. The couple had four sons. Robert Todd Lincoln was their only child to survive into adulthood. In 1860, Lincoln was elected as the 16th President of the United States. Lincoln's Vice-President was Andrew Johnson. Six weeks after becoming President, the Civil War began. In this war, the Northern states (the Union) fought the Southern states (the Confederacy). The Civil War lasted from 1861 until 1865. On January 1, 1863, he issued the Emancipation Proclamation that declared forever free those slaves within the Confederacy. Lincoln never let the world forget that the Civil War involved an even larger issue. This he stated most movingly in dedicating the military cemetery at Gettysburg. Lincoln promoted Ulysses S. Grant General-inChief of the Union Army. Lincoln won re-election in 1864, as Union military victories signaled an end to the war. In his planning for peace, the President encouraged Southerners to lay down their weapons and join in reunion. In 1865, General Robert E. Lee (Confederacy) surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant (Union) at Appomattox Court House in Virginia. The Civil war was over. Six days after the Civil War ended - On Good Friday, April 14, 1865, Lincoln was assassinated at Ford's Theatre in Washington by John Wilkes Booth, an actor, who somehow thought he was helping the South. 1.
