3) Describe life on the home front during the Civil War.
During the Civil War, life of the home front was one filled with lots of violence and economic
problems. For the south many riots broke out over food and jobs. That was because the already
poor economy there was being deteriorated even more. Women had gained more roles in the
war as well. Those in the Union got roles as nurses. Confederate women got to have a wider
range of jobs. Rebellions in the south over the issue of conscription also broke out.
4) What were the reasons that the North was victorious?
The North was victorious because it had a larger pool of well trained and/or experienced
military leaders and larger forces in general. Union forces had Ulysses S. Grant and Sherman.
On the other hand the Confederacy only had Robert E. Lee. Grant and Sherman were really
important because of their fearlessness in battle, which was the type of people that Lincoln
desired to lead his troops. Most important about Grant, though, was that he had made great
achievements during the Civil War. Not only had he captured the entire Mississippi River but
he also made Lee surrender after capturing Petersburg. During other battles such as the Battle
of Chattanooga, Grant would come to the rescue and provide support for weaker Union forces.
On the political side, Lincoln’s making of the Emancipation Proclamation made a large step in
the effort. He was able to free all of the slaves and strengthening the Union victory by allowing
them to join the military.
