EMBRACE YOUR TRUE NORTH NATURE
SUDBURY THEATRE CENTRE 16|17 SEASON
YOUR HOME FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS
ARTISTIC EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR CALEB MARSHALL
ARTISTIC EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR CALEB MARSHALL
After 45 years, it’s time to celebrate. It’s time to celebrate our community, our culture,
our heritage, and our voice. It’s time to celebrate the True North.
And, after 45 years, it’s time for the next stage.
To celebrate our milestone 45th Anniversary, STC is offering you a 16|17 Season unlike
anything that has come before it. As you’ll see in the folds of this brochure, we are tripling
our programming and adding a diversity of content that is unprecedented in our history.
We’re throwing open our doors to the performing arts and, for the first time, introducing
a Music Series, Dance Series, Comedy Series, and Variety Series celebrating 150
years of Canadian culture, and anchored by a rousing mainstage Theatre Series and
Young Audience Series dedicated to northern Ontario artists and stories.
We’re also entering into creative partnerships including the first ever coproduction
with our Francophone counterpart, Le Théâtre du Nouvel-Ontario, a coproduction with
YES Theatre, and a production in concert with Science North. We have broadened our
diversity with cross-cultural programming to better reflect our community. And, as we
roll out this exciting new chapter in STC’s history, you’ll also hear about new initiatives
to make our theatre even more accessible, including relaxed performances, half-price
rush tickets, and new inviting patron experiences to deepen your engagement.
Our new myPicks Subscription allows you to experience STC with more flexibility and
affordability than ever before and our $12 student ticket now applies to all Series.
On behalf of the entire STC team, we thank our valued funders and partners, our
dedicated volunteers, and you, our devoted patrons. This is your home for the
performing arts and, after 45 years, we invite you to join us in celebrating our past and
looking boldly ahead into our future.
Embrace your True North nature this season at the Sudbury Theatre Centre.

account
of friendship
and fragility.
BY COLLEEN MURPHY

cherished beliefs about life and hope into question. Playwright, Colleen
Murphy grew up in northern Ontario.

Memories
in the mirror
are closer than
they appear.
Lost on a northern Ontario highway on the outskirts of civilization, 25 year-old
Guy has no idea where he is or where he’s headed. Still, he fixes his eyes on the
road ahead and keeps his foot on the gas as he tries to outrun his troubling past.
Original French language presentation at Le Théâtre du Nouvel-Ontario,

CELEBRATING 45 YEARS OF
PROFESSIONAL THEATRE IN SUDBURY
SPECIAL VERBATIM WORKSHOP READING
BY EMIL SHER
25 NOV 2016
Two families
were destroyed
by imprecise
testimony.
This new work in development explores the world of the wrongfully convicted,
weaving verbatim text — interviews, articles, court transcripts — into a theatrical
whole. There is a poetry and power to words that are unvarnished and unscripted,
all the more so in a play that casts a stark light on the searing consequences of a
wrongful conviction. Although the disgraced Dr. Smith was based in Toronto, his
impact and influence was far-reaching and shattered lives in northern Ontario.

a wonderful life?

Blending in

LOOSELY BASED ON TRUE EVENTS BY
DINA MORRONE
The Tappino family left the warmth of the southern Mediterranean coast in the
early 60s with no idea of where they were actually headed except that it was
somewhere in North America. They arrived in bush country north of the icy cold
shores of Lake Superior. When a loose moose wanders into town, the immigrant
family soon realize the moose is not the only one that is displaced and confused.

What it means
to be Canadian
and dream.

Theatre isn’t all about being the centre of attention. It builds confidence and selfesteem, challenges an individual’s comfort level and breaks down social barriers.
The STC Academy introduces participants of all ages and experience levels to
the magic of theatre in a supportive, social, and non-threatening environment.
Our classes are led by skilled instructors with extensive teaching backgrounds.
Students are exposed to a wide range of games, exercises, and experiences that
are tailored to any skill level. All classes end with a presentation for family and
friends. Visit sudburytheatre.ca for a complete list of classes.
