Function of the endocrine system: to maintain homeostasis
Thymus gland: cortex and medulla (site of maturation of white blood cells)
Thyroid gland (secretes thyroid hormone and calcitonin)
Parathyroid gland (secretes parathyroid hormone, which increases blood
calcium)
• Adrenal gland: Capsule, cortex (secretes aldosterone to increase salt
reabsorption which raises blood pressure, androgens and estrogens, and
cortisol); medulla (secretes epinephrine)
• Pituitary gland:
– Posterior pituitary (AKA neurohypophysis or pars nervosa) secretes oxytocin and ADH
– Anterior pituitary (AKA adenohypophysis or pars distalis) secretes MSH, GH, ACTH,
PRL, TSH, LH, FSH.
• Pineal Gland: Pinealocytes, pineal sand (secretes melatonin)
