for promoting the engagement and recognition of women in sport a Sports Award Amanda Shalala believes that increased media coverage is the first step to redressing the position of women in sport. As a presenter and reporter for Grandstand on ABC News 24 she has ensured comprehensive coverage of women’s sport by producing and editing lengthy feature stories, and conducting weekly in-depth interviews. She initiated The Ladies Stand, the only program of its kind in mainstream Australian media dedicated solely to women’s sport. She makes regular contributions to Grandstand on-line, and across the ABC’s other radio networks, on issues such as sponsorship in women’s sport. As a female sports journalist, Amanda feels a very strong personal responsibility to rectifying the vast disparity in reporting of women’s sport, and is wholeheartedly committed to making it possible for young girls to see strong, skilful and determined role models. Amanda Shalala shines a light on the issues affecting sports women, and her contribution is unique in the mainstream media. AMANDA SHALALA The 2015 Edna Ryan Awards 23 October 2015
