“Healthy Respiratory System” Prevention Plus Series By Pamela A. Heyen and Cristina Campbell What you will learn: • The importance of clean, fresh air • How the respiratory system functions • What causes respiratory infections • Ways to support the respiratory system • Steps to heal from chronic respiratory illnesses • Effects of toxic chemicals What is Respiration? • It is the process of lungs expanding and contracting • Supplies life sustaining oxygen to the body • Removes a waste product called carbon dioxide The Respiratory Process • Starts at nose and mouth • Small hairs in the nose, called cilia keep air passages clean and filter out large particles • Travels into the windpipe, or trachea and then divides into air passages called bronchial tubes • Bronchial tubes pass through the lungs, into smaller air passages called bronchioles The Respiratory Process (cont.) • Over 300 million alveoli, act as filters in the bronchioles • Mucus in the trachea and bronchial tubes keep air passages moist stopping dust, bacteria and viruses, allergy causing substances, and other substances from entering the lungs • Impurities reaching deeper parts of the lungs are moved up via mucous and coughed out or swallowed The Respiratory Process (cont.) • The heart pumps the blood providing oxygen to cells of tissues and organs • Carbon dioxide is produced and absorbed into the blood • Blood carries the carbon dioxide back to your lungs through capillaries • Carbon dioxide is removed from the body through exhaling Accessory Respiratory Organ The Diaphragm's Role in Breathing • A large dome-shaped muscle under the lungs • Contracts, creating a vacuum that causes a rush of fresh air into the lungs • Opposite occurs with exhalation, the then diaphragm relaxes and the lungs deflate Respiratory Disorders "He lives most life whoever breathes most air." Elizabeth Barrett Browning Asthma Respiratory disorder affecting more than 300 million people worldwide Symptoms: • An asthma attack includes coughing, wheezing, and chest tightness • Airways become inflamed, narrow and fill with mucus • Symptoms and triggers are different for everyone Causes: • Allergens, cold air, exercise, or emotional stress Note: Essential Oils should not be inhaled for asthma related problems, apply to soles of feet, chest or ingest. Testimonials I would easily get walking pneumonia every fall and winter. I would go through a series of antibiotics and feel OK for awhile and then back to more walking pneumonia. I started to fill a veggie cap with oregano, thieves, lemongrass, and ImmuPower to experiment on what these oils would do. I am happy to report they worked very well for me! I am so happy I tried them. Now when I feel congestion coming on, I know these oils will do the trick. Margie Silvius, OH My first experience with Young Living oils was in 1999 when I was very ill with pneumonia. My Dr. wanted to hospitalize me and use I.V. antibiotics, to which I refused both. A friend brought Thieves and Raven to me, telling me to put Thieves on my chest, and Raven all over the bottom of my feet...and to use Raven all over my chest and Thieves all over the bottom of feet again when I went to bed, which is exactly what I did. The next morning I awakened all but totally well! I was astounded at the healing that had taken place!!! I have been using the oils ever since and always will.
