“Healthy Respiratory System”
Prevention Plus Series
By Pamela A. Heyen and Cristina Campbell
What you will learn:
• The importance of clean, fresh air
• How the respiratory system functions
• What causes respiratory infections
• Ways to support the respiratory system
• Steps to heal from chronic respiratory illnesses
• Effects of toxic chemicals
What is Respiration?
• It is the process of lungs expanding
and contracting
• Supplies life sustaining oxygen to the
body
• Removes a waste product called
carbon dioxide
The Respiratory Process
• Starts at nose and mouth
• Small hairs in the nose, called cilia keep
air passages clean and filter out large
particles
• Travels into the windpipe, or trachea
and then divides into air passages
called bronchial tubes
• Bronchial tubes pass through the lungs,
into smaller air passages called
bronchioles
The Respiratory Process (cont.)
• Over 300 million alveoli, act as filters in
the bronchioles
• Mucus in the trachea and bronchial tubes
keep air passages moist stopping dust,
bacteria and viruses, allergy causing
substances, and other substances from
entering the lungs
• Impurities reaching deeper parts of the
lungs are moved up via mucous and
coughed out or swallowed
The Respiratory Process (cont.)
• The heart pumps the blood providing
oxygen to cells of tissues and organs
• Carbon dioxide is produced and
absorbed into the blood
• Blood carries the carbon dioxide
back to your lungs through capillaries
• Carbon dioxide is removed from the
body through exhaling
Accessory Respiratory Organ
The Diaphragm's Role in Breathing
• A large dome-shaped muscle under the
lungs
• Contracts, creating a vacuum that causes
a rush of fresh air into the lungs
• Opposite occurs with exhalation, the
then diaphragm relaxes and the lungs
deflate
Respiratory Disorders
"He lives most life whoever breathes most air."
Elizabeth Barrett Browning
Asthma
Respiratory disorder affecting more than 300 million people worldwide
Symptoms:
• An asthma attack includes coughing,
wheezing, and chest tightness
• Airways become inflamed, narrow and
fill with mucus
• Symptoms and triggers are different for
everyone
Causes:
• Allergens, cold air, exercise, or
emotional stress
Note: Essential Oils should not be inhaled for asthma related problems, apply to soles of feet, chest or
ingest.
Acute/Chronic
Bronchitis
Inflammation of the membranes
lining the bronchial tubes
Symptoms:
• Cough
• Mucus, clear, white, yellowish-gray
or green in color
• Shortness of breath, made worse
by mild exertion
• Wheezing
• Fatigue
• Slight fever and chills
• Chest discomfort
Causes:
•Allergies, environmental toxins
and/or infection
Emphysema
Symptoms:
• Shortness of breath
Air sacs (alveoli) of the lungs
are enlarged and damaged • Rapid breathing and wheezing
• Chronic cough (with or without sputum)
• Barrel chest (over inflated lungs)
Causes:
• Smoking
• Deficiency of alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT) an
inherited condition
• Industrial pollutants/non-tobacco smoke
• Physical damage caused by an accident
• Scarring from whooping cough, acute
bronchial pneumonia, tuberculosis and asthma
Upper
Respiratory
Infections (URI)
Infections affecting the throat, sinuses,
larynx, trachea and bronchi
Symptoms:
• Cough
• Runny nose, nasal congestion or
post nasal drip
• Sneezing and coughing
• Sore /scratchy throat, painful swallowing
• Malaise and fever
• Lasts 2-14 days, can linger for several
weeks
The cause of URI’s are virus related, over 200
different viruses. Flu vaccines are not effective
for URI’s.
Cystic Fibrosis
Glue-like mucus build up
affecting intestines, pancreas
and especially the lungs
Symptoms:
• Diarrhea that does not go away
• Foul-smelling, greasy stools
• Frequent episodes of wheezing
• Frequent episodes of pneumonia
• Persistent cough
• Skin tastes like salt
• Poor growth
• Chronic sinus infection
This is an inherited disease due to mutation in
a gene and there is no known cure.
Pharyngitis
Symptoms:
Inflammation of the throat • Sore or red throat
• Lump in throat
• Fever
• Swollen neck lymph glands
• Difficulty and pain swallowing
Causes:
• Viral 90% or bacterial, i.e. tonsillitis or strep
throat
• Related to a minor illness such as a cold or flu
• Injuries or irritants such as smoking, postnasal
drip, allergies, and inhalation of toxic chemicals
Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)
Severe acute respiratory disease of unknown etiology
Symptoms:
• Fever
• Dry cough
• Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
• Appear in usually 3 to 7 days but may be as
long as 10 days
Causes:
• Virus
• Spread mainly through contact with infected
saliva, droplets from coughing or sharing
food or drink
Pneumonia
Lower respiratory tract lung
infection which may not
require antibiotics
Symptoms:
• Cough
• Fever and chills
• Shortness of breath and chest pain
• Weakness
• Fast heartbeat
• Diarrhea, nausea and vomiting
• Mild symptoms called “walking pneumonia”
• Usually clears up in 2 to 3 weeks
Not all pneumonia is bacterial.
Testimonials
I would easily get walking pneumonia
every fall and winter. I would go
through a series of antibiotics and feel
OK for awhile and then back to more
walking pneumonia. I started to fill a
veggie cap with oregano, thieves,
lemongrass, and ImmuPower to
experiment on what these oils would
do. I am happy to report they worked
very well for me! I am so happy I tried
them. Now when I feel congestion
coming on, I know these oils will do the
trick. Margie Silvius, OH
My first experience with Young Living oils was in
1999 when I was very ill with pneumonia. My Dr.
wanted to hospitalize me and use I.V. antibiotics,
to which I refused both. A friend brought
Thieves and Raven to me, telling me to put
Thieves on my chest, and Raven all over the
bottom of my feet...and to use Raven all over my
chest and Thieves all over the bottom of feet
again when I went to bed, which is exactly what I
did.
The next morning I awakened all but totally well!
I was astounded at the healing that had taken
place!!!
I have been using the oils ever since and always
will. Christy Andrews, WY
Chemical Pneumonia
Inflammation of lung tissue from poisons or toxins
Symptoms:
Causes:
• Burning of the nose, eyes,
lips, mouth, and throat
• Substances including liquids, gases, and
• Dry cough
• High levels of chlorine in a small room
may cause respiratory failure or death
• Chest pain and painful
breathing
small particles, such as dust or fumes
• Nausea
Factors that determine the severity of signs and symptoms:
• Type and strength of chemical
• Protective measures used
• Length of exposure
• Prior medical condition
• Exposure environment
• Your age
• Form of chemical - gas, vapor, particulate, liquid
Tuberculosis (TB)
Infectious bacterial (Tubercules Bacillus) disease transmitted
through the air that mainly affects the lungs
Symptoms:
• Fever
• Weight loss
• Chest pain
• Loss of appetite
• Night sweats
• Coughing up blood
Only about 10% of people infected ever
develop TB. Many of those who suffer with
TB do so in the first few years following
infection, but the bacillus may lie dormant in
the body for decades.
This is caused by a bacteria.
Can be fatal if left untreated

Frankincense and Hyssop
“I was over using a rescue inhaler . The Dr.
told me I could have killed myself because
I was using it too frequently. This was in
2007. I started to use Frankincense and
Hyssop on myself for respiratory relief. I
started rubbing those on my feet first,
some relief, then on feet and
chest, BINGO I can breathe freely without
the aid of my inhaler. I have not had
Asthma problems since. What a blessing
it is to have God's oils in our presence!”

I had a upper respiratory infection that turned into chronic
rhino sinusitis. I was stuffy for three months not being able
to breathe through my nose. I had tried many herbs, steams,
snuffs, and oils without success, until peppermint.
I put 2 drops on my tongue and the roof of my mouth. In a
few minutes I was breathing through my nose! Every time I
got stuffy after this I repeated the process. I started with a
few times a day and in 3 days I was better. Sheila Perez, MA

Testimonials
This winter there had been a respiratory virus
going around and it has tried to get me
twice. At the first signs I put R.C. on my chest
and back over the lung area and a drop of
two on my throat. Both times I did this at
night before going to bed and the next
morning no sign of the respiratory virus.
Jan Jordan, TX
We just love the Thieves oil blend.
For colds and flu, go for Thieves. Sore
throat? A drop of thieves in water,
gargle and swallow. Or try Thieves
spray - one spray does the trick.
Thieves lozenges are great, too,
especially for the little ones. Thieves
cleaner is 'my' cleaner for
everything, from cabinets and high
chairs, to all bathroom fixtures,
doorknobs and dishes. Thieves
toothpaste is a must, and safe for the
whole family. Virginia Chavey, TX
