One of the key qualities of all stories is that they're made to be shared.! We connect events and emotions and instinctively transform them into a sequence that can be easily understood.! ! READING! Read the following text.! THE REAL PRINCESS, adapted from the classic tale by Hans Christian Andersen! There was once a prince, and he wanted a princess, but then she must be a real Princess. He travelled right round the world to find one, but there was always something wrong. There were plenty of princesses, but whether they were real princesses he had great difficulty in discovering; there was always something which was not quite right about them. So at last he had to come home again, and he was very sad because he wanted a real princess so badly.! One evening there was a terrible storm; it thundered and lightened and the rain poured down in torrents; indeed it was a fearful night.! In the middle of the storm somebody knocked at the town gate, and the old King himself went to open it.! It was a princess who stood outside, but she was in a terrible state from the rain and the storm. The water fell down her hair and her clothes; it ran in at the top of her shoes and out at the heel, but she said that she was a real princess.! 'If that is true will soon be seen,' thought the old Queen, but she said nothing. She went into the bedroom, took all the bedclothes off and laid a pea on the bed: then she took twenty mattresses and piled them on the top of the pea, and then twenty feather beds on the top of the mattresses. This was where the princess had to sleep that night. In the morning she was asked how she had slept.! 'Oh terribly badly!' said the princess. 'I have hardly closed my eyes the whole night! Heaven knows what was in the bed. I seemed to be lying upon some hard thing, and my whole body is black and blue this morning. It is terrible!'! They saw at once that she must be a real princess when the pea had been felt through twenty mattresses and twenty feather beds. Nobody but a real princess could have such a delicate skin.! So she was taken by the prince to be his wife, for now he was sure that a real princess had been found, and the pea was put into the Museum, where it may still be seen if no one has stolen it.! CLIL! Storytelling in indigenous cultures (adapted from Wikipedia, Storytelling)! ! For indigenous cultures of the Americas, storytelling is used as an oral form of language associated with practices and values essential to developing one’s identity. Therefore, everyone in the community can add their own touch and perspective to the narrative collectively. Stories in indigenous communities differ from other forms of stories because they are told not only for entertainment, but for teaching values. For example, the Sto:lo community in Canada focuses on reinforcing children’s identity by telling stories about the land to explain their roles.! For many indigenous people, experience has no separation between the physical world and the spiritual world. Thus, indigenous people communicate to their children through ritual, storytelling, or dialogue for everything comes from the Great Spirit or Creator and is one. Everything, including inanimate objects, has a soul and is to be respected. These values, learned through storytelling, help to guide future generations and aid in identity formation.! Values! Stories are based on values passed down by older generations to shape the foundation of the community. Storytelling is used as a bridge for knowledge and understanding allowing the values of "self" and "community" to connect and be learned as a whole. Body movements and gestures help to communicate Javier García Bonifaz - Creative Commons License - Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike! Elders, parents, and grandparents would be involved in teaching the children the cultural ways, along with history, community values and teachings of the land.! Storytelling also serves to deliver a particular message at spiritual and ceremonial functions. In the ceremonial use of storytelling, the unity building theme of the message becomes more important than the time, place, and characters of the message. Once the message is delivered, the story is finished. As cycles of the tale are told and retold, story units can recombine, showing various outcomes for a person’s actions.! ! It could be a good idea to change a word for another if you are not completely sure how it is spelt.! ! • Paragraphs. Divide your composition in three or four paragraphs.! ! • Punctuation. All sentences must end with a full stop. Use commas wisely; do not separate subject and verb with a comma.! ! 2. Grammaticality:! ! • Word order. Remember that subjects come before verbs; check word order if you are using indirect speech. Adjectives come before nouns.! ! • Concordances. Remember -s in the third person singular of present simple.! ! • Pronouns. Remember that he and she only replace male and female subjects; for the rest we normally use it. If it is a plural noun, we always use they. For direct and indirect object and after a preposition we use object pronouns (me, you, him, etc.).! ! • Quantifiers. A common mistake is to use very directly before a noun; very modifies adjectives and adverbs. Much is for uncountable nouns and many for countable, although they are used mainly in negative and interrogative sentences; we can replace them by a lot of.! ! • Negation. Remember that negation is formed by adding not to the auxiliary verb, except for present simple and past simple, when we need don’t/doesn’t and didn’t.! ! • Verb tenses. Remember that past perfect is used for actions happened before another past action. ! ! • Time expressions. Do not use actually to indicate time; use now or nowadays.! ! • Articles. A/an are used for singular countable nouns. When we talk about a noun in a generic sense, we do not use articles.! ! • Possessives. There are other possessive forms apart from your. Remember that his for singular male possessors, her for singular female possessors and its for the rest of singular possessors. For plural possessors the right form is their.! ! • Irregular plurals. Some English nouns do not form their plural forms by adding -s, like men, women, children, teeth, feet. Others have the same form in plural as in singular, like sheep, fish. ! ! • Modal verbs and defective verbs. Pure modal verbs have only got one form; they do not add s in the third person singular. They do not take auxiliary verbs before them either. Used to is only used for the past; for the present we must use adverbs of frequency.!
