Spanish language sustainability biodiversity women and gender race ethnicity social class agriculture economy art politics globalization Where we go...below are some of the communities and regions we visit during the interim: Quito, Ecuador's capital city at 10,000 feet of elevation in the Andes Otavalo and the Kichwa communities of the Andean Highlands of northern Ecuador Chota and an Afro-­‐Ecuadorian community of the arid Chota River valley Yasuní National Park in the Amazon rainforest on the Napo River Galápagos Islands 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador in the Pacific Ocean Why Ecuador? Ecuador, a South American country slightly smaller than Colorado, is an exceptionally beautiful and diverse place. It is home to over 16 million people who live in areas as diverse as the Andes mountains, the Amazon rainforest, and the Galápagos Islands. The country has one of the world's highest concentrations of biodiversity and an amazing range of climates and ecologies, including two of the world's 35 biodiversity hotspots. The country is also extraordinarily rich in its human diversity, home to a variety ethnic groups with unique identities. Ecuador's fascinating cultural mosaic, biological wealth, natural resources, and significance for the global community make it an ideal place to complement Spanish-­‐language skills with a broad and relevant 21st-­‐century perspective. General Course Description: Spanish 233-­‐-­‐Intermediate Spanish II in Ecuador-­‐-­‐is a content-­‐based language course that enhances reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills through the study of contemporary Ecuadorian society. The course includes an extended homestay with a family in the capital city, Quito, as well as classes, guest lectures, museum and city tours, and excursions to other regions of Ecuador. The course readings include Spanish-­‐language news articles, short story, and essay. There are also lectures, discussions, and activities with experts on biology, economy, gender, and sustainability-­‐-­‐there's even an Ecuadorian cooking class. In-­‐class activities include small-­‐group work, discussion, and oral reports. Assessments include journal entries, written quizzes and exams, and a two-­‐page research paper. Program Cost: The program cost is $3,995. This fee includes airfare; room and board (family homestay and hotel accommodations during excursions); entrance fees to cultural activities; travel to and from excursions; etc. Additional expenses not included: books and course materials, local transportation in Quito, and personal spending money. Application Procedure: Completed applications are due Monday, May 2, 2016. The application is online through the St. Olaf International & Off-­‐Campus Studies Office website (http://wp.stolaf.edu/international/). Acceptance to the program will be based on written applications, fulfillment of the academic requirements, and a short interview to be arranged with the professor leading the interim.
