 AP World History Summer Assignment 2015 Dear Student, It is with great pleasure I welcome you to AP World History. I am excited that you have chosen to take this challenging but rewarding course. AP World History is a college-­‐level course, which offers many opportunities for you to develop your analytical and critical thinking skills. With so much material to cover in such a short period of time, it is imperative that all students get an early start on the content of the course. This assignment is designed to help you become familiar with the concepts and terms covered in the first unit. This assignment consists of three parts: Part I Vocabulary, Part II Mapping, and Part III Comparative Essay. Below, you will find directions for each activity. Read the directions for each section carefully. The assignments are worth 100 points each (three test grades) and are due on the first day of class. You can find the definitions to the terms below at https://quizlet.com/_1f77mb. There will be a vocabulary quiz over the terms the first week of school. Therefore, you are to study these terms throughout the summer in preparation for the quiz. For each term, you are to: 1.) Write down the term and definition from the Quizlet.com list above. 2.) Part II: Mapping Activities (100 Point Test Grade) Complete the attached mapping activity (p. 5). Your map must be accurate and neat to receive full credit. Complete the following mapping tasks: 1.) Locate and label the following areas: Anatolia, Sumer, Akkad, Assyria, Arabia, Syria, Palestine, Cyprus, and Egypt. 2.) Label the locations of the following cities: Ur, Uruk, Eridu, Lagash, Nineveh, Assur, Jericho, Memphis, Nippur, and Babylon. 3.) Label the Sahara Desert, Mediterranean Sea, Caspian Sea, Persian Gulf, Red Sea, and Sinai Peninsula. 4.) Draw and label the Nile River, Tigris River, and Euphrates River. 5.) Use different colors to shade the areas for Mesopotamia from 3,000 B.C.E. to 2,000 B.C.E., the Assyrian Empire, Hammurabi’s Empire, and the Hittite Empire. 6.) Create a comprehensive map key. Make sure to include the timeframe for each empire in your key. Use the Internet to find maps of the ancient world. Part III: Comparative Essay (100 Point Test Grade) Write a comparative essay on one of the topics listed below. 1.) Use the rubric on the next page as a guide for writing your essay (p. 3). 2.) The essay must be handwritten and is worth a test grade. Use the attached graphic organizer to write your essay (p. 6). Essay Topics (Choose One): Topic #1: Analyze the similarities and differences between the governments of the ancient Babylonian Empire and the United States of America. Topic #2: Analyze the similarities and differences between Hammurabi’s Code and the Ten Commandments of Moses.
