WHY ARE LEAVES GREEN? WITH THE NAME OF ALLAH, MOST GRACIOUS, MOST MERCIFUL. In the animal world there are many different colours. There are brown and orange giraffes, white polar bears, blue beetles and birds of various colours. But in the plant world, ‘the green kingdom’, leaves of nearly all plants are green. Why? The great difference between animals and plants is that animals eat other things for their food and plants do not! Plants are able to make their own food. Leaves have a wonderful substance inside them that makes food of air and water, with the help of sunshine. This substance is called chlorophyll and it is green. So a healthy leaf is green because it is filled with chlorophyll. Leaves which do not get enough light turn pale and yellowish because the chlorophyll cannot work without sunlight. Now discover how leaves turn yellow. Put a seedling in a dark room and leave it there for about a week. Take it out. You will notice how yellow and weak it looks because it has not had any sunlight. Listen to Sura Rahman (ch. 55): verses 11 - 12:“It is he who has spread out the earth for his creatures: therein is fruit and date-palms, producing spathes (enclosing dates); also corn, with (its) leaves and stalk for fodder, and sweet-smelling plants.” Worksheet 1) Why is a healthy leaf green? 2) What is the great difference between plants and animals?
