Chapter 1-Science Study Guide
The children will need to know the following vocabulary words and concepts:
Organisms make more of their own kind by reproduction.
An organism is a living thing.
Every cell has a nucleus.
A conifer produces seeds in cones.
New plants look like their parents because of heredity.
The root of a plant grows underground, and the stem of a plant carries minerals
and water from the root.
The leaf of a plant takes in sunlight and air.
A plant embryo is a young plant just beginning to grow.
Plants respond to their environments by bending towards the sunlight.
They need to be able to distinguish living from non living things in a picture.
They should be able to figure out if roses in a backyard are a deep orange red,
what their offspring will look like.
They should know that a chloroplast is NOT found in an animal cell.
Plants make food by using chlorophyll to trap light.
They should know that plants need sunlight, water, air and minerals from their
environment to grow, and without these things, the plants may die.
They should know that we depend on plants for food. We also eat other animals
that eat plants for food, and that plants give us oxygen.
They should be able to give a good reason as to why a seed that fell on the
ground in November would wait until April to germinate.
They should be able to suggest a way to make another plant without using seeds
from another plant.
Good Luck! 
