Name:_________________________________ Homework: Karyotyping Activity Date:_____ Answer the following: 1. What sex chromosome combination does a female have?_____________ 2. What sex chromosome combination does a male have?______________ 3. How many chromosomes are in normal human cells?_________ Use the internet to define karyotype: Karyotype - ____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ The pictures below show normal ( all 46 non-damaged chromosomes) Female Karyotype (2 X chromosomes) Male Karyotype (XY chromosomes) Why would scientists use karyotypes? Scientists use karyotypes to diagnose genetic disorders. A karyotype can show if there are extra, missing, or structurally damaged chromosomes. Predict: What could cause someone to have missing or damaged chromosomes? The following are four case studies. Each karyotype is showing a certain genetic disorder. Analyze the karyotypes below to determine how they are different from normal human karyotypes and answer the questions that follow each. Case Study #1 – Dr. Wilson runs some tests and analyzes his patient’s karyotype. What he sees is shown below. How is this karyotype different from a normal human karyotype? Which chromosome is affected? Disorder Name: Down Syndrome Case Study # 2 – Dr. Smith noticed that his male patient was exhibiting female characteristics. He took a look at his cells and discovered the following karyotype: What is different between this karyotype and a normal male karyotype? Why might his patient have been exhibiting female characteristics? Disorder Name: Kleinfelter’s Syndrome Case Study # 3 – Dr. Wong had a patient that suffered from mental retardation. Upon a closer look at the karyotype this is what she saw: Does this karyotype have a normal amount of chromosomes?_________ What is different between this karyotype and a normal human karyotype? Disorder Name: Cri du Chat (Cry of the cat) Case Study # 4 – Dr. Jones noticed that her patient was not maturing during puberty, she decided to run some tests and saw this karyotype: How many chromosomes does this karyotype have?_________________ What chromosome is missing? Disorder Name:Turner’s Syndrome
