Marilyn Gregory The American Gastroenterological Association estimates over 60 million Americans suffer acid indigestion each month. Acid Reflux or heartburn occurs when stomach acid comes up through the gastroesophageal valve and burns the esophagus causing the burning sensation in the center of the chest we call heartburn. What can happen to the body? Occasional heartburn or acid reflux is not serious, just very uncomfortable. It becomes a problem when it occurs on a regular basis. When the esophagus is regularly burned, it can eventually erode due to this continual acid damage. This more serious condition is called gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD. GERD can increase the risk of esophageal cancer. The stomach and small intestine can also be affected. The stomach lining can wear down, causing ulcers. The small intestine can become irritated and ulcerated if the stomach does not neutralize secretions from the gallbladder and pancreas. The problem with antacids and acid blockers- Antacids work against or neutralize stomach acid. Acid blockers are drugs that prohibit the stomach from producing acid. While they may provide temporary relief by masking symptoms, they do not treat the underlying cause. Also, they can come with a host of additional problems. We need stomach acid to break down food and absorb minerals like calcium, iron, zinc, etc. Neutralizing or prohibiting stomach acid continually upsets metabolism and mineral balances in the body. Over time, these imbalances may make indigestion even worse. Ultimately, digestion is hampered and nutrients are not absorbed. Many commercial antacids contain toxic ingredients such as aluminum, artificial colors and sweeteners. These chemical combinations not only disrupt digestion but they also alter the structure and function of stomach lining cells. Side effects can include diarrhea and stomach pain. What about all of those advertisements that push antacids as calcium supplements? Yes, they contain calcium, but since they are neutralizing the very acid needed to absorb calcium, they are not supplying a usable form of calcium. Using herbs instead of purple pills*Slippery Elm and Liquid Chlorophyl- Can assist in lubricating the gastroesophageal valve, helping it to close properly so that stomach acid does not come back through. *Stomach Comfort- A natural alternative to commercial antacids. It contains NO artificial ingredients. Instead, it contains herbs that aid in the digestive process, soothe the stomach, and promote healing of the stomach lining. *Proactazyme- Contains vegetable-derived enzymes that help break down all three major categories of nutrients- fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. *PDA or Food Enzymes-Help to supplement hydrochloric acid production after eating. Helps to eliminate that bloated, heavy feeling after eating, as a result of poor protein digestion. *Goldenseal- For immediate relief of acid indigestion. Although it’s very bitter, placing the powder on the tongue and sucking on it will relieve the burning very quickly. *Small Intestine Detox- Helps to break down accumulated undigested protein in the intestinal tract. It helps break down this material in the small intestine with pepsin, a protein-digesting enzyme. *Aloe Vera Juice- Sipping small amounts will cool the burning and inflamed sensation. It also helps to normalize the pH of the body, reducing the general over acid condition. *Intestinal Soothe and Build- Helps tissues of the digestive tract to repair themselves and soothes the burning sensation. *GastroHealth-Helps remove H. pylori bacteria from the body which contributes to ulcers. Also helps soothe a stomach irritated by acid burning. *Catnip- Is known as “nature’s Alka-Seltzer” and is very useful for this type of acid indigestion. *Anti-Gas Formula with Lobelia or Chinese Anti-Gas Formula- Helps when bloating and gas are problems. Both formulas improve digestion function and reduce gas and bloating which can ease belching and acid reflux. ReferencesHorne, Steven.
