Unit #: ____8____ Subject(s): _______Science__________ Grade(s): ____7___ Designer(s): Ellsworth, Harrington, Rodriguez STAGE 1 – DESIRED RESULTS Unit Title: Genetics and Heredity Understandings: Students will understand that… Genetic information is passed from one generation to the next. The method of reproduction determines the variety of traits an organism can inherit. Patterns of inheritance can be predicted. Organisms that look alike may have different underlying genetic material. All behavior is affected by both inheritance and experience. The environment and lifestyle choices affect the traits an organism inherits and passing on. Students will know: That there is a greater variety of possible traits inherited when organisms reproduce sexually. The significance of chromosomes and DNA in the transfer of traits from parents to offspring. Know the difference between dominant and recessive traits. Mutations in genes can cause body parts or systems not to work properly or lead to the presence of a genetic disease. The genetic makeup of an organism along with the environment affects the behavior of an organism. Essential Questions: 1. Why is there a greater possibility of traits inherited from sexual reproduction than from asexual reproduction? 2. What are the genetic factors that determine an organism’s traits? 3. How can Punnett squares and pedigree charts be used to predict the patterns of inheritance? 4. How does genetic makeup influence the behavior of organisms? 5. How can the environment and a person’s lifestyle choices affect biological inheritance? Students will be able to: Compare and contrast sexual (fertilization and meiosis) and asexual reproduction (budding and mitosis). Predict genetic possibilities using Punnett squares and pedigree charts. Identify the genotype and phenotype for a given trait. 7.L.2.2 STAGE 1– Standards Understand the relationship of the mechanisms of cellular reproduction, patterns of inheritance and external factors to potential variation among offspring. Explain why offspring that result from sexual reproduction (fertilization and meiosis) have greater variation than offspring that result from asexual reproduction (budding and mitosis). Infer patterns of heredity using information from Punnett squares and pedigree analysis. 7.L.2.3 Explain the impact of the environment and lifestyle choices on biological inheritance (to include common genetic diseases) and survival. 7.L.2 7.L.2.1 Technology Standards 7.TT.1 Use technology and other resources for assigned tasks Adapted from Understanding by Design, Unit Design Planning Template (Wiggins/McTighe 2005) 1 Unit #: ____8____ Subject(s): _______Science__________ Grade(s): ____7___ Designer(s): Ellsworth, Harrington, Rodriguez 7.TT.1.1 Use appropriate technology tools and other resources to access information.
