History
You are going to create a timeline for Russian history and a timeline for Eastern
Europe history. Read through the events and then order them chronologically. You
may use technology to help you figure out the timeframe. Once you have the events
in order, record the timeline/events on your handout.
Czar Peter 1 – known as Peter the Great – came to
power. Under his rule, Russian enlarged its territory,
built a strong military, and developed trade with
Western Europe.
Mikhail Gorbachev becomes leader of the Soviet Union
and institutes a policy of economic restructuring called
perestroika.
A program known as “Russification” was created to
make those of non-Russian decent more Russian.
Collapse of the Soviet Union and satellite countries
declare their independence
Ottoman empire rules much of Southeastern Europe until the
end of World War 1.
After World War II Eastern Europe falls under the control of
the Soviet Union.
Large scale public demonstrations contribute to the fall of the
communist governments in the east.
Russian workers that suffered hardships from WW1
protested demanding “bread and freedom”, triggering the
Russian Revolution.
Nationalist protests and financial crisis led to new, ethnicbased countries within Yugoslavia.
Ethnic cleansing happens affecting all groups, but mainly
Bosnian Croats and Bosnian Muslims.
The country of Yugoslavia is divided into 8 smaller countries.
Communist Soviet Union engaged in a political and ideological
war with the West. (Cold War)
