Do I need to be an athlete to see
a Sports Medicine Physician?
What is the difference between
a Sports Medicine physician
and an Orthopedic surgeon?
• No, you do not need to be an athlete. Your
sports medicine physician is trained and
equipped to see patients of any age or athletic
ability from the “weekend warrior” to the
“industrial athlete” with injuries,
musculoskeletal pain or performance issues.
Both specialties require training in
musculoskeletal medicine.
• Sports Medicine physicians specialize in
the non-surgical medical treatment of
musculoskeletal sports conditions.
• Sports Medicine physicians are excellent
resources for those who wish to begin an
exercise program.
• Orthopedic surgeons are also trained in
the surgical treatment of these conditions.
Approximately 90 percent of all sports injuries
require non-surgical treatment; however, if
surgery is needed, Sports Medicine physicians
can expedite a referral to an orthopedic surgeon.
Sports Medicine physicians
have additional training in the
non-musculoskeletal aspects
of sports medicine.
