We have been talking about the movies, and how they reveal the disasters and triumphs of the human condition. Many of our movies today, such as Spiderman, Batman, Superman, and Ironman, feature super-heroes, who are dedicated to saving the city or even the world. This is not a new concept, however. From ancient times, we have had super-heroes, whose stories were told in Greek and Roman mythologies. The characters were often known as demi-gods. A demi-god is a divine or supernatural being in classical mythology. The term has been used in various ways at different times and can refer to a figure, who has attained divine status after death, a minor deity, or a mortal, who is the offspring of a god and a human. So, even the term demi-god is subject to confusion. Part of this confusion originated from classical poets from 800 BC to the Christian era, who used their poetic licenses, to tell the stories of even earlier times. Often, the characters get intertwined in various ways and diverse places, depending on how the poets wished to weave the plots and emphasize certain ethics and traits. Consequently, the same story plays out quite differently. Modern film making is no exception to the rule. Watching a variety of films, which deal with the same subject matter, same events, and same super-heroes, can cause the audience to wonder: "What was the real story?" It is like the situation, when a police officer interviews 5 witnesses at a crime scene and gets 5 different stories. But we do not have to think too deeply about the historicity of the super-hero film, which is not only for our enjoyment, but also for our enlightenment. What can we learn about the human condition from the super-hero films, which are based on classical Greek mythology? I compared two films of the super-hero genre - The Clash of the Titans from 1981 and from 2010. http://putlocker.bz/watch-clash-of-the-titans-online-free-putlocker.html (1981) http://www.novamov.com/video/994e42b03cdff (2010) The 2010 re-make got horrible reviews. For example, "... a picture that mistakes furious action for excitement and ponderous performances for drama." Or, "The CGI extravaganza can't overcome all the other flaws: sloppy exposition, terrible dialogue, heavy-handed acting, and not a single likable character in the bunch." And, "Greek gods make lousy dads." While that last critic's comment was meant to slam the film, it does get to the heart of a serious problem: What is the relationship between parents and their children? In Greek mythology, the gods were subject to all of the emotions and shortcomings of mortals - jealousy, hatred, lust for power, murder, revenge, torture, and more. If the gods had all of these troubles, what could we expect from their children? As the Emerald Tablet notes: "As above, so below." And yet, the gods and goddesses sometimes show concern and love for their children, which often brings conflict with each other. The story of The Clash of the Titans does not really match Greek mythology, since In Greek mythology, the Titans were a primeval race of powerful deities, the descendants of Gaia (Earth) and Uranus (Sky) that ruled during the legendary Golden Age. They were immortal giants of incredible strength and were also the first pantheon of Greek gods and goddesses. They were overthrown by the Olympians, including Zeus, who was the son of two Titans: Cronus (Saturn, Father Time) and Rhea (the mother of the Olympian Gods and Goddesses) and the grandson of the Titan Uranus. Before we continue with the movie story, I want to interject a story from another source - The Holy Bible, from Genesis 6:4: "The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men, who were of old, the men of renown." So, here we see the pattern in both Greek and Hebrew tradition of the sons of Gods coming down from heaven to mate and have children with human women. Could this indicate a common story? Next time, we will explore additional aspects of the movie The Clash of the Titans. Until then, this is L. J. wishing you a fantastic English study. Song: Once I Walked in the Sun Once I walked in the sun You told me I was the one who made this life so it is worth the sorrow You said you felt the same You reached out and whispered my name Promising me tomorrow All you left me is a song I sing it now that you've gone At least love in the songs lasts forever Music only survives In the melody we're alive Feeling it all together Living inside a song When we made love What a perfect world we made together When we made love How I wished that life went on and on Once I walked in the sun Once I walked in the sun I feel the light until my life is done Lovers dance by the sea And they're always you and me And music soft as the night falls around us Hope you're watching the stars And the moonlight falls where you are One time the music found us One time we made a song When we made love...
