CHINA’S PAST
I.
PICTURING CHINESE HISTORY
i. Anyang: a town in eastern China known for its artifacts of bone.
ii. China’s culture is very unique because the culture has been
continuous, or unbroken, from its earliest recorded history to
today.
iii. Pictographs: a picture that represents a word.
II.
ANCIENT VOICES
a. People told tales because they felt the need to explain natural phenomena
and their origins.
III.
THE SHANG DYNASTY
a. Shang Dynasty: the first dynasty in Ancient China.
b. Goods that were traded:
i. Crops
ii. Cloth
iii. Bronze tools
iv. Cups
v. Weapons
c. Bronze Age: period during which tools and weapons were made out of
bronze.
d. Oracle Bones: a bone commonly used during the Shang Dynasty in China
to predict the future.
e. The Shang people were the first people to make written records.
IV.
THE LONGEST DYNASTY
i. Zhou Dynasty: the largest of the Chinese dynasties.
1. This dynasty was separated into two periods:
a. Western Zhou
b. Eastern Zhou

THE FIRST EMPEROR
a. Shi Huangdi: King of Qin who created the first unified Chinese Empire
and became the first Chinese emperor.
b. Qin Dynasty: the Chinese dynasty founded by the first Chinese emperor.
c. Provinces: poliical divisions.
d. Great Wall: a wall in China originally built for protection from northern
invaders that over centuries was extended to more than 4,300 miles.
VI.
HAN DYNASTY
a. Han Dynasty: dynasty that lasted from 206 BC to 220 AD.
b. Gaozu: first ruler of the Han dynasty that lifted the ban on books in China.
c. Ancestor: a relative that lived longer ago than a grandparent.
d. Wu Di: Chinese emperor who increased authority during the Han dynasty.
e. Sima Qian: wrote the first complete history book on China.
f. Ban Zhao: she continued the work of Sima Qian and supported education
for women.
g. Civil Service: the practice of using skills and talents to work in the
government.
VII.
INVENTIONS
a. Middlemen: people who go between buyers and sellers.
b. Silk Road: a trading route that connected Europe and lands of the former
Roman Empire with China.
