Prof Dr WJ Paulus focused his scientific career on diastolic myocardial dysfunction in
heart failure. During his cardiology fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital
(Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA) it became apparent to him that patients could
suffer from heart failure without a cardiac contractile deficit. In these patients, diastolic
stiffening of the myocardium was compromising cardiac function. He founded the
European Study Group on diastolic heart failure to address these issues. Their reports
on the diagnosis of DHF (Eur Heart J 1998;19:990; Eur Heart J 2007;28:2539) rank
among the most cited papers of the European Heart Journal. He coordinates the FP7Health 2010 project of the European Commission on diastolic heart failure (Acronym:
MEDIA; Budget: 12.106€). He also chairs the scientific committee of the interuniversity
cardiological institute of the Netherlands (ICIN) and co-edits “Cardiology”, one of the
major textbooks in cardiology, whose third edition appeared in 2009.
