Using my blindingly fast Comet Craft, I recently traveled to each of our Solar System’s eight (ahem...nine*) planets. I collected data and sketched the delegates from each planet as I traveled. Both NASA and the President of the United States have given me permission to provide this invaluable information from my sketchbook as a freely distributable guide. I hope you enjoy. -Michael Startzman *I know there are only 8 planets but in an effort of diplomacy, I thought it best to include Pluto. Read on and you’ll see why. The Nalrodage have no discernible mouth and can actually travel through space without The Sun is the star at the center of the Solar System. It is artificial aid. They grow up to 4 feet tall and seem to be comprised almost perfectly spherical and consists of hot plasma of light and gas. Unlike their home star, the Sun, the Nalrodage interwoven with magnetic fields. Chemically, about three quarters of the Sun's mass consists of hydrogen, while the rest is mostly helium. The remainder consists of heavier elements, including oxygen, carbon, neon and iron, among others. The Sun is informally designated as a yellow dwarf, because its visible radiation is most intense in the yellow-green portion of the spectrum and although its color is white, from the surface of the Earth it may appear yellow because of atmospheric scattering of blue light. The Sun is now thought to be brighter than about 85% of the stars in the Milky Way galaxy, most of which are red dwarfs. -wikipedia.org are cool to the touch. MERCURY Mercurian // The U'asenth (oo•ah•sehn•TH) The U’asenth have four wings and can travel at speeds up to 80 mph. All U’asenth have “fire” heads which Mercury is the smallest of the eight planets. It is also the closest to the Sun. Mercury goes around the Sun the fastest of all the planets and has no moons. The Romans believed that gods and goddesses were in charge of everything on Earth. Mercury is named after the messenger for their gods. The Roman Mercury had wings on his helmet and shoes. He could travel very quickly from place to place. The planet Mercury moves quickly around the sun. That is how it got its name. Mercury is a little bigger than Earth's moon. It is made of heavier materials, like iron. If you could weigh Mercury and the moon, Mercury would weigh a lot more. Mercury is heavy, but it is small. It would take more than 18 Mercurys to be as big as Earth -nasa.gov shift in color and can appear blue, green, red, yellow, orange and white. The U’asenth grow no larger than 3 feet in height. VENUS Venus is the second planet from the Sun, and is Earth's closest neighbor in the solar system. Venus is the brightest object in the sky after the Sun and the Moon, and sometimes looks like a bright star in the morning or evening sky. Venus is classified as a terrestrial planet and it is sometimes called Earth's "sister planet" owing to their similar size, gravity, and bulk composition. Venus is covered with an opaque layer of highly reflective clouds of sulfuric acid, preventing its surface from being seen from space in visible light. Venus has the densest atmosphere of all the planets in the Solar System, consisting of mostly carbon dioxide. Venus is covered with craters, volcanoes, mountains, and big lava plains. -nasa.gov -wikipedia.org Venusian // The Agerack (ag•erh•ahk) Agerack have a series of tubes on their head and “gills” on their faces for filtering the heavy amounts of carbon dioxide and sulfuric acid found on Venus. Ageracks have a glassy appearance filled with ever-moving gasses and grow to over 8ft tall. EARTH Earthling // The Doggy (dah•gee) The Doggy have four legs and vary drastically in size. Most Doggy have a powerful nose making them capable of tracking prey or finding other Doggy from great distances. The Doggy also Earth (or the Earth) is the third planet from the Sun, the densest and fifth-largest of the eight planets in the Solar System. It is also the largest of the Solar System's four terrestrial planets. It is sometimes referred to as the world, the Blue Planet, or by its Latin name, Terra. About 71% of the surface is covered by salt water oceans, with the remainder consisting of continents and islands which together have many lakes and other sources of water. Earth's only known natural satellite, the Moon, which began orbiting it about 4.53 billion years ago, provides ocean tides, stabilizes the axial tilt, and gradually slows the planet's rotation. -wikipedia.org possess a tail though its usefulness has yet to be determined. MARS Martian // The Froud (frowd) The Froud are found all across the surface of Mars and range in size from 2ft to 4ft in height. The Froud communicate by a series of high pitched whistles and can withdraw entirely into their “shells”. It is unclear if the shell is grown or scavenged. Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and the next planet beyond Earth. It is, on average, more than 142 million miles from the sun. Mars is about one-sixth the size of Earth. Mars is known as the Red Planet. It gets its red color from the iron in its soil. Mars is named for the ancient Roman god of war. The Greeks called the planet Ares. The Romans and Greeks associated the planet with war because its color resembles the color of blood. Mars has two small moons. Their names are Phobos and Deimos. They are named for the sons of Ares, the Greek god of war. Phobos means "fear," and Deimos means "panic. -nasa.gov JUPITER Jupiterian // The Chreelddenl (kree•ehld•den•ul) Possessing an odd number of “legs” only serves to make the Chreelddenl an even stranger race. Seemingly bulky, the Chree’ are exceedingly fast. They also possess a number of thin, breathing tubes on their arms allowing Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun and the largest planet within the Solar System at two and a half times the mass of all the other planets in our Solar System combined. Jupiter is classified as a gas giant along with Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Together, these four planets are sometimes referred to as the Jovian or outer planets. The Romans named the planet after the Roman god Jupiter. When viewed from Earth, Jupiter can reach an apparent magnitude of −2.94, making it on average the third-brightest object in the night sky after the Moon and Venus. Jupiter is primarily composed of hydrogen with a quarter of its mass being helium. Because of its rapid rotation, Jupiter's shape is that of an oblate spheroid (it possesses a slight but noticeable bulge around the equator). The Great Red Spot, a giant storm that is known to have existed since at least the 17th century when it was first seen by telescope. -wikipedia.org them to run without getting winded on Jupiter’s stormy surface. SATURN Saturian // The Isst (izt) The Isst vary in size much like earthlings do. They have bright blue, shiny eyes and bio-luminescent filaments just below the segmented neck. The Isst are very friendly and quite agile. They are able to leap around Saturn in great bounds sometimes carrying them nearly a mile at a time. Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun and the second largest planet in the Solar System, after Jupiter. It is named after the Roman god Saturn. Saturn's ring system is the most extensive and complex in our solar system; it extends hundreds of thousands of kilometers from the planet. Saturn's rings are made mostly of water ice, and "braided" rings, ringlets and "spokes" dark features in the rings that seem to circle the planet at a different rate from that of the surrounding ring material. Some of the small moons orbit within the ring system as well. Saturn has 31 known natural satellites (moons). The largest, Titan, is a bit bigger than the planet Mercury. Titan is shrouded in a thick nitrogen-rich atmosphere that might be similar to what Earth's was like long ago. -wikipedia.org Uranian // The Rilim URANUS (ril•ehm) The Rilim reach nearly 14 feet in height (when standing upright) and grow brilliant, glass-like protrusions on their backs. They are nearly the same color as their environment and their skin seems to shift accordingly. Despite their limber appearance, the Rilim are quite slow and deliberate in their movements. Uranus is the seventh planet from the Sun. It has the thirdlargest planetary radius and fourth-largest planetary mass in the Solar System. It is named after the ancient Greek deity of the sky Uranus, the father of Cronus (Saturn) and grandfather of Zeus (Jupiter). Uranus was also the first planet discovered with a telescope. Uranus is the only planet whose name is derived from a figure from Greek mythology rather than Roman mythology. Uranus is similar in composition to Neptune. Uranus's atmosphere, contains more "ices" such as water, ammonia and methane and is the coldest planetary atmosphere in the Solar System. -wikipedia.org Neptunian // The Orworach NEPTUNE (or•wa•rawk) The Orworach reach a height of 12 feet, have four massive arms and a thick coat of dense fur. Some Orworach have been seen with four horns but it is more common to see two. The Orworach live in underground caverns but frequently venture to the surface in search of food. Neptune is the eighth and farthest planet from the Sun in the Solar System. Named for the Roman god of the sea, it is the fourth-largest planet by diameter. Neptune's atmosphere is composed primarily of hydrogen and helium, along with traces of hydrocarbons and possibly nitrogen, containing a higher proportion of "ices" such as water, ammonia and methane. Astronomers sometimes categorize Neptune as an "ice giant" in order to emphasize these distinctions. The interior of Neptune is primarily composed of ices and rock. Traces of methane in the outermost regions in part account for the planet's blue appearance. Neptune's atmosphere is notable for its active and visible weather patterns. These weather patterns are driven by the strongest sustained winds of any planet in the Solar System. Because of its great distance from the Sun, Neptune's outer atmosphere is one of the coldest places in the Solar System. -wikipedia.org PLUTO Plutonian // The Saykril (sey•kril) Roughly 3ft. tall, little else is known about the Saykril They were mostly inhospitable when I met with them; still clearly upset about the demotion of Pluto to a dwarf planet. I even heard talk of retaliation as I was leaving. Pluto, is the second-most-massive known dwarf planet in the Solar System and the tenth-most-massive body observed directly orbiting the Sun. Originally classified as the ninth planet from the Sun, Pluto was recategorized as a dwarf planet and plutoid due to the discovery that it is one of several large bodies within the Kuiper belt. Like other members of the Kuiper belt, Pluto is composed primarily of rock and ice and is relatively small: approximately a sixth the mass of the Earth's Moon. Pluto has four known moons. -wikipedia.org Find more drawings and free books at www.michaelstartzman.com 13
