ASCRS 2013, poster presentation 7 Narrative report I am an ophthalmologist at the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary. I practice general Ophthalmology with a special interest in cataract, corneal and external diseases. I maintain a busy clinical and surgical practice at Mass Eye & Ear’s Longwood medical area office as well as the main location. I strive to provide quality patient care in an ethical and evidence-based manner using state of the art technology. I participate in a number of clinical trials in collaboration with MGH and DFCI, as well as in DFCI’s Bone Marrow Transplant Survivorship Clinic. In addition to my clinical responsibilities, I am heavily involved with the MEEI Ophthalmology residents’ education in several capacities. I serve as the Comprehensive Ophthalmology Service (COS) curriculum advisor for the residency program. In that role, I review and revise the Goals and Objectives for the COS rotation and the cataract Morbidity and Mortality conference. I coordinate the COS lectures for the resident lecture series. I am a preceptor for a second year residency rotation, introducing the residents to cataract surgery in a stepwise fashion. I am also one of the core Wet Lab preceptors for MEEI. Throughout the year, I am routinely assigned a medical student who spends a 4-week elective rotation at MEEI. I enjoy my role as an educator and derive special satisfaction from it. In 2014, I was awarded the “Surgical Teacher of the Year” award by our residents. I also serve as the Coordinator of the Ophthalmology Consult Service at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital Emergency department and inpatient wards. In that role, I oversee the smooth function of the service, and ensure that appropriate and timely patient care is being provided. I supervise the residents and fellows who perform the consults, and coordinate the attending coverage. I have also been involved in the coordination of the MEEI cataract surgery database, facilitating communication between the data entry staff and the COS surgeons, revising the data collection process and reviewing the data analysis and result publication for COS. In addition, I am happy to serve as a member of MEEI’s Human Studies Committee and Utilization Review Committee. On a daily basis, I find my clinical practice extremely rewarding and enjoy the core of my specialty: examining the eye, diagnosing and treating eye disease. I enjoy providing patient care both on an outpatient basis, as well as in the inpatient setting, as a member of a multidisciplinary team. Finally, having the opportunity to introduce medical students to our field, and to teach a group of extremely talented and hard-working residents is a privilege and a responsibility that I take very seriously. 8
