OCULAR TUMOR SERVICE
The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary is a national referral center
within the Collaborative Ocular Melanoma Study of the National Eye
Institute/National Institutes of Health. New and innovative treatments
for patients with eye cancer include radioactive plaques to treat intraocular
tumors and chemotherapy for conjunctival neoplasia. Tumors of the eyelids, iris, retina, choroid and optic nerve are also treated by specialists in
this service. A multidisciplinary Ocular Tumor Board meets monthly to
discuss the most difficult cases and formulate therapeutic options
OTOLARYNGOLOGY/ HEAD & NECK SURGERY
Head & Neck Oncology: A team comprised of board-certified surgeons,
medical & radiation oncologists, nutritionists and rehabilitation specialists
ensure rapid recovery from complex, life saving surgical procedures and
return to daily activities.
Thyroid Center: A unique center concentrates on streamlining the
diagnosis and treatment of thyroid diseases and cancers with a highly
skilled team of surgeons, endocrinologists and radiologists to manage
the patient’s care. An area of expertise is cancer resulting from radiation
exposure such as that from Chernobyl.
Facial Plastics and Reconstructive Surgery: Treatment of facial tumors, both
benign and cancerous, frequently requires expert reconstruction. Designed to
restore the function and appearance of the face, these procedures may be
required after appropriate treatment of skin cancers or deep tumors.
Otology–Neuro-otology: These rare cancers can be treated by our highly
skilled team of surgeons which includes a neuro-otologist and a neurosurgeon.
Center for the Voice and Swallowing: Program cooperatively staffed by
a team of specialists able to diagnose cancer of the vocal cords early and
rehabilitate the voice after surgical and radiation treatment.
PATHOLOGY & LABORATORY MEDICINE
The Ocular Pathology Service is the leading laboratory in the Northeast
and utilized by ophthalmologists throughout the region. The Infirmary is
the site of some of the most promising studies into diseases and cancers of
the eye, ear, nose and throat. Among them: cellular markers of oral cancer
risk, non-invasive detection of thyroid cancer, basic cell biology of the
growth of ocular melanoma cells, and persistence of biomaterials for repair
in plastic and reconstructive surgery.
PLASTIC & RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY
The Department of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery treats more than
1,500 patients a year who seek reconstructive surgery of the body as well as
facial area as a result of accident, birth defect or cancer, and those
who elect cosmetic surgery. It is one of the few hospitals in the region
to perform breast reconstruction after mastectomy with microvascular
surgery to harvest tissue from patients’ lower body to create living,
natural, and normal looking breasts, often preferred to artificial implants.
State-of-the-art lymph node transfer to cure post-mastectomy lymphedema
is also available.
