THE NEW YORK EYE AND EAR INFIRMARY 310 East 14th Street New York, New York 10003 Tel. 212.979.4000 Fax. 212.228.0664 www.nyee.edu OCULAR TUMOR SERVICE The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary is a national referral center within the Collaborative Ocular Melanoma Study of the National Eye Institute/National Institutes of Health. New and innovative treatments for patients with eye cancer include radioactive plaques to treat intraocular tumors and chemotherapy for conjunctival neoplasia. Tumors of the eyelids, iris, retina, choroid and optic nerve are also treated by specialists in this service. A multidisciplinary Ocular Tumor Board meets monthly to discuss the most difficult cases and formulate therapeutic options OTOLARYNGOLOGY/ HEAD & NECK SURGERY Head & Neck Oncology: A team comprised of board-certified surgeons, medical & radiation oncologists, nutritionists and rehabilitation specialists ensure rapid recovery from complex, life saving surgical procedures and return to daily activities. Thyroid Center: A unique center concentrates on streamlining the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid diseases and cancers with a highly skilled team of surgeons, endocrinologists and radiologists to manage the patient’s care. An area of expertise is cancer resulting from radiation exposure such as that from Chernobyl. Facial Plastics and Reconstructive Surgery: Treatment of facial tumors, both benign and cancerous, frequently requires expert reconstruction. Designed to restore the function and appearance of the face, these procedures may be required after appropriate treatment of skin cancers or deep tumors. Otology–Neuro-otology: These rare cancers can be treated by our highly skilled team of surgeons which includes a neuro-otologist and a neurosurgeon. Center for the Voice and Swallowing: Program cooperatively staffed by a team of specialists able to diagnose cancer of the vocal cords early and rehabilitate the voice after surgical and radiation treatment. PATHOLOGY & LABORATORY MEDICINE The Ocular Pathology Service is the leading laboratory in the Northeast and utilized by ophthalmologists throughout the region. The Infirmary is the site of some of the most promising studies into diseases and cancers of the eye, ear, nose and throat. Among them: cellular markers of oral cancer risk, non-invasive detection of thyroid cancer, basic cell biology of the growth of ocular melanoma cells, and persistence of biomaterials for repair in plastic and reconstructive surgery. PLASTIC & RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY The Department of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery treats more than 1,500 patients a year who seek reconstructive surgery of the body as well as facial area as a result of accident, birth defect or cancer, and those who elect cosmetic surgery. It is one of the few hospitals in the region to perform breast reconstruction after mastectomy with microvascular surgery to harvest tissue from patients’ lower body to create living, natural, and normal looking breasts, often preferred to artificial implants. State-of-the-art lymph node transfer to cure post-mastectomy lymphedema is also available. Each year the Ophthalmology Department performs more than 22,000 surgeries and sees more than 155,000 visits from outpatients. The Otolaryngology Department performs more than 6,000 surgeries and has some 70,000 outpatient visits. A third clinical department, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, is a natural complement to the Infirmary’s other services with another 1,500 cases a year.
