BARRIERS AND CHALLENGES IN OCULAR DRUG DELIVERY Paula de Oliveira Centre of Mathematics of the University of Coimbra Ocular drug delivery represents a major challenge due to the unique physiology of the eye. The challenge is related with the many ocular barriers that act to protect the eye from deleterious agents that may be present in the blood flow. Several ocular drug delivery systems have been proposed to overcome such physiological barriers and to improve ocular bioavailability. In this talk we present mathematical models that describe in vivo drug release to the anterior chamber and the vitreous chamber of the eye. The models are represented by coupled systems of Partial Differential Equations, linked by interface conditions. Pathological conditions are examined and its influence on the tailoring of drug delivery devices is addressed.
