ELEC 719
PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM: Students must have
completed their M3 Core Clerkship in Medicine or Family Medicine.
NOTE: Students are required to provide their own direct ophthalmoscopes. The Department
of Ophthalmology does not have ophthalmoscopes available for student use.
PURPOSE: This is a specialty rotation in ophthalmology. Students will observe and learn the
proper performance of a basic comprehensive eye examination which is essential for those
who become primary care physicians.
COMPETENCIES: The primary objective is to learn to perform a comprehensive eye
examination which will enable students to evaluate various ocular complaints and to better
diagnose and/or appropriately refer to an ophthalmologist.
Students will be required to:
-Know the essentials of ocular anatomy;
-Measure and
record visual acuities;
-Assess pupillary reflexes and ocular motility;
-Be familiar with
the use of the slit lamp biomicroscopy in order to perform a basic eye examination of the
external apparatus and the anterior segment of the eye;
-Learn the use of the direct
ophthalmoscope in order to better evaluate the fundus of the eye;
-Evaluate the optic disc
for the detection of glaucoma;
-Continue to learn to evaluate visual fields by confrontation
examination.
INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES: Clinical care is provided at the Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary
in the Department of Ophthalmology outpatient clinics. Daily didactic lectures are held on a
variety of topics pertinent to the specialty. Video and CD-ROM teaching aids are available for
student use. Students will have an opportunity to work with residents and attendings in the
general and specialty eye clinics, including emergency eye screening.
ASSESSMENT: Student performance is evaluated by residents and faculty members.
Knowledge and skills will be determined during clinical rotations through didactic discussions
with various faculty members and a written examination. Completion of an on-line College of
Medicine "Final Course Evaluation" is required before receiving a final grade.
