DOS Core Files File Description io.sys Contains generic drivers. Kernel. msdos.sys command.com Goodheart-Willcox Co., Inc. Interprets commands. Also called command interpreter. Internal Commands Command System Response date Displays the date. dir Displays a list of files, directories, and subdirectories. del Deletes a file. copy Copies a file or group of files from one location to another location. rename Changes a name of a file. time Displays the time. ver Displays the version of the OS running on the computer. External Commands Command System Response chkdsk Checks the condition of a disk and displays a report. edit Starts a text editor program, which is similar to a word processor. format Prepares a disk for storing data. print Prints a text file to a printer. Booting refers to starting the computer and loading the OS. To create a DOS boot disk, the format a: /s command is used. Goodheart-Willcox Co., Inc. Eight-character or less filename, a period (dot), and a threecharacter extension. Goodheart-Willcox Co., Inc. Common File Extensions File Extension Description .bmp A bitmap graphics file. .com An executable command file. .dll A dynamic link library, which is a collection of data or function that can be used by Windows applications. .doc A document file. .exe An executable file. One that is a program and will run if the name is typed at the DOS prompt. .ini A file containing configuration information for Windows. .log A file that lists actions that have occurred. .txt A text file. Config.sys Used to load device drivers and to configure, disable, or enable OS features, such as number of files that can be opened. Config.sys Commands Command Function files Used to specify how many files can be opened at one time. devicehigh Loads a device drive into upper memory. buffers Specifies how much memory is allocated for transferring files to and from disks. lastdrive Sets the maximum number of available drives that can be set up on a computer. rem Used to place text in a file as notes. Autoexec.bat Commands Command Function echo Hides or displays messages on the display, using the switches on and off. path Sets up a search path to locate executable files. prompt Determines the appearance of the DOS prompt. rem Used to place text in a file as notes. Anything following the command rem will not be executed. set Sets up, displays, or removes DOS variables. shell Used to specify the location of the command interpreter to be used. pause Suspends the program until any key is pressed.
