Infirmary Department of Pediatric Ophthalmology, Adult Strabismus and
Orthoptics has a long tradition of being at the forefront of care for children

Services to
Children & Families
The New York Eye and Ear
Infirmary is an international leader
in restoring the gifts of sight and
sound to children. Children comprise more than twenty-five percent
of NYEE patients across all special-
Amblyopia (lazy eye) occurs when one or both eyes do not receive normal
visual input or the two eyes are not working together and there is competition between the eyes. Treatment may involve glasses, patching, and/or eye
drops. Surgery may also be necessary if there is strabismus (ocular misalignment) or an associated structural abnormality such as cataract (a cloudy
lens), ptosis (a droopy eyelid), or cloudy cornea.

The Pediatric Ophthalmology department has extensive experience in
treating patients with less common conditions such as congenital or
developmental cataracts, congenital or developmental glaucoma, pediatric
corneal problems, other congenital anomalies of the eyes, developmental
anomalies of the visual system, retinopathy of prematurity, ocular infections,
tumors and trauma.

Pediatric Otolaryngology: In one of the select specialized hospitals for
medical/surgical care of the ears, nose, throat and related structures,
medical staff see a great number of routine pediatric problems involving
infections of the ears, tonsils and sinuses, in addition to complex and rare
conditions such as profound hearing loss, cleft palate, neck masses, vascular
anomalies and hemangiomas, and airway disorders.
The hospital also provides superb services in pediatric audiology, speech
and language pathology, sleep disorders center, and a pediatric accredited
radiology facility.
NYEE’s Ear Institute is one of the premiere facilities for diagnostic and
therapeutic services for children, teens and adults suffering from hearing
loss and congenital defects and conditions related to the ear.
The Institute is a pioneer in cochlear implants, which allow patients, some
as young as six months of age, to hear through electrical signals delivered
to the auditory nerve. It performs more than 100 implants a year, a large
volume for this highly specialized surgery, making it one of the nation’s
leading providers for cochlear implants. The Ear Institute is distinguished
from other hearing centers by its Educator Liaison and Auditory Hearing
Habilitation Programs dedicated to assisting children with cochlear
implants and/or hearing aids to succeed in school.
pediatric care continues to rise, as
studies prove that early intervention leads to optimal quality of life.
NYEE physicians care for children
correct congenital defects, or suffering from a comprehensive array of
eye, ear, nose and throat disorders,
diseases and conditions. NYEE is
the best place in the area to get several ophthalmologic subspecialists
together to treat children with
complex eye disorders and it is a
pioneer in cochlear implantations
to reverse deafness in infants as
young as five months.
Every patient and family receives a
thorough evaluation and medical
and surgical options are discussed.
At the core of every recommendation is a family-centered philosophy
with the conviction that physicians
and families are partners in making
the correct decision to meet each
child’s needs.
