The Romans Class: Squirrels (Year 3) Term: Brilliant Beginning Sparkling Starter Fabulous Finish The children will be looking at Roman numerals and how these are used today in different places within their homes and the wider local area. The children will start off the topic looking at the myth of Romulus and Remus and how Rome was founded. They will use their observational skills to identify objects, and learn about the past using artefacts from the Priest House Museum. We will share what we have learnt about the Romans at our Look and See in December. We will show the work we have accomplished and give our visitors a chance to work with us to produce our own mosaics. Live, Love, Learn Why? This topic helps us to understand an important period of world history, focusing on what occurred in our own country at this time and the impact this has had on our lives today. British values The children are aware of British values and these will be represented in our learning in the following ways; Democracy - Children will look at the way Roman Emperors governed and how this contrasts with our own democracy today. The Rule of Law – Children will see how law and order was maintained in Roman Britain and compare this to today. Individual Liberty - Children will see how Roman citizens and those that they conquered did not always have individual liberty and think about why our individual liberty is so important. Mutual respect - Children will share their ideas during lessons, showing respect to each other at all times. Tolerance – Children will see how the Romans were not always tolerant of others and the impact this had. Rights Respecting Schools As a Right’s Respecting School we will consider the following rights in this topic; Article 17: Every child has a right to access correct information Article 28: Every child has the right to a good education We will look at mosaics and how they were produced in the Roman era. We will consider Roman armour and create our own record of this through a range of art and craft activities. We will consider the significance of Roman designs and reflect this in our own design work. We will study the myth of Romulus and Remus and the founding of Rome. We will use the story to provide inspiration for the Pupil led Learning English What are Roman numerals? How was the Roman army organised? What was it like to be a Roman soldier? Art & Design planning and writing of our own myth to explain the founding of Alderholt! We will be considering the features of letters and why they are written. We will compare the use of formal and informal styles, and the associated layout and vocabulary. We will explore letter writing both in role as a Roman soldier, and writing for modern day purposes. We will learn about play scripts through our Christmas performance, and practice reading aloud with a sense of audience. We will try to improve our sentence structure, exploring both the use of conjunctions and vocabulary choices. We will continue to investigate spelling patterns, refine our use of punctuation and practice our joined handwriting. Geography Maths As geographers, we will use atlases to locate Italy and Rome. We will observe how the Roman Empire evolved using an interactive map. History As historians we will learn about the story of how Rome was founded. We will have hands-on experiences with Roman artefacts, and use our archaeology skills to make suggestions. We will discuss how Britain was affected by the Roman invasion and the impact it had on our lives today. We will find out how Boudicca led the rebellion against them As mathematicians, we will be considering our mental and written methods using our new Inspire Maths Scheme. We will show calculations pictorially using the part-part-whole model. We will refine our ideas of place value by partitioning numbers and regrouping. Music RE We will use the Bar Model method to convey addition and subtraction problems in a clear and precise way. We will use this to enable us to complete word problems, and write answers using correct mathematical vocabulary.
